A bit of a advice needed - anyone know much about radiators? I need to replace one and the way I measure it its 962mm in length. But I can only buy a new one in either 900mm or 1000mm. Is the old one actually 1000mm in length and I'm measuring it like a fucking pleb?

Try going to a shop and measuring one that says it is 1000mm in the same way and seeing if you agree. It may be 1000 across the top, or 1000 across the bits where the pipes connect, I guess.

The only way to know for sure is to measure them both the same. Being as you don't know how they measure theirs, then go and measure one of theirs the way you do.

Simple, innit.

Yeah but they're in packaging so I cant. And there's no way I'm talking to a B&Q shop assistant. 1, they're never that helpful and 2, I always end up feeling like the lunchtime story in the staff room.

This weekend for instance:
Me: Can you mix up this colour paint please.
Shop assistant: Yeah, what do you want it in?
Me: Errr, a big tin.
Shop assistant: No - matt, silk...

Is there not a site entitled "DIY for idiots" that gives advice on measuring radiators?

Here's my advice: Get the nice plumber in to do it for you (:

it occurs to me they might be including the little stickeyoutey bits of taps and connectors and so forth, at the bottom of the radiator. that'd be another couple of centimetres out each side, easy.

I suspect that they are. I imagine that if you imagined the radiator not being there, and measure between the connecting pipes that would be left hanging, that THIS dimension is that to which they refer.

Which will take you more toward the 1000mm, Sul.

Yes, silk, please, but my name isn't Mat.

No the pipes have to be lengthened. Good old dad. Always makes things more difficult than they need to be. The rad' is about 40 years old and apparently, "they dont make em like they used to". Thank you metric.

How comes some BBC programs can decorate a room in a weekend and its taken me nearly three weeks. Fucking lying cunts. And never trust Crowns one coat solo brilliant white. Not only is it not one coat but its not that brilliant either. It dried a skin over itself on my windowledge thus making me have to strip the fucking thing down again because if you left a beer can on it it sank a ring into it. Fucking fuck!

Sul, You need a some "through couplings" to extend your pipes, I asked my dad a plumber/pipe fitter.

MY pipes, on the other hand, are frikkin HUGE; and hence don't need extenders so much as camouflagers.

mind you, i'll take as many "through couplings" as you've got. cheers.

Sul, don't use the new plastic range, I know it's axiomatic, but you know what these B&Q assistants are like, they will try and sell you any old shit, like "One coat" paint.

For advice on camouflaging pipes, you need to speak to my husband, who happens to be pissed, sorry I mean tired after a hard days work, and unable to speak coherently.
