they implemented their first customer signup only a couple of weeks ago and he reported that
a/ it worked
b/ because they're so keen to not sully their reputation by a poor rollout, their customer service/technical service was all over him like a rash at the hint of any hiccup
so looks like the key problem is only that they have VERRY limited geographical coverage for now. oh, and since it's adsl2, your existing "modem" may not work or at least be capped at 8mb/s
Posted by
boonkoh, 14th October 2005:
I signed up for BeThere, and getting my service in 2 weeks time. I'm one of the lucky areas in London that can actually get the service at the moment, although I think by the end of the year the whole of London should be ready.
Their pricing is very competitive... 24 pounds for 24Meg connection, with a free wifi router/modem to use (so no worries about your existing modem not working). The next best deal is from bulldog, 29.99 a month for 8megs, and a bad reputation.
If anyone's thinking of signing up, what they don't tell you on the signup form is that if you enter a member's email address as the referrer, you get the first month free. So if you don't know any members yet, you can enter my email address:
boon.koh***@***imperial.ac.uk (remove the ***'s). I guess that's Be's way of rewarding word of mouth advertising..
I'm signed up with Be, not happy at all :( I signed up 1st Sept, and about the 14th I rang to ask how long it would be, not cos I was annoyed, just to know. They said it takes 3 weeks, so the 21st. I mentioned on the phone it was a bit of a con, as they advertised the month of September free, but there would only be a little over a week left. The reply I got was: “Yeah. [pause] Yeah…..” On the 24th I called again, they said there had been a delay; it would be 6 days, the 30th. I said they should’ve told me that, and I shouldn’t have to contact them, and also that the free month would be none existent. The guy didn’t apologise, and said he would put a note on my account; whatever good that does me I’m not sure. I wrote a “ticket” voicing my complaint on the website and waited. On the 30th I got an email saying I would receive my modem on the 6th Oct, when my account would be activated. I was also given a site to track the delivery of my modem, which didn’t work at any point. On the 4th they took the money and sent me another mail saying my order had been delayed to the 6th, the date they had already sent me. Modem arrived on the 5th, on the 6th there was no connection and I got a mail saying the ticket in my name had been resolved (I had received no response/explanation/apology, they had not done ANYTHING I had asked). On the 7th I got a mail saying there had been more delays, I would be connected on the 11th and given a free month. By now I had spent over £50 on a temporary dialup connection over 2 weeks. I wrote another longer complaint, voicing all my concerns and again asking for an explanation. On the 11th there was no connection, and I rang up at 15:00 and was on hold for 15 minutes before I hung up. After a phone call on the 12th, my connection came on about 21:00. The next day I got a mail saying the ticket in my name had been resolved, although the only point they had addressed was the connection coming on.
I’ve been on for 5 days now, the speed tests come in between 2 and 8 Mbps down (should be 24) and 1Mbps up (as advertised) plus the line drops at least four times every hour, sometimes six or eight, resulting in a two minute modem reset or a five minute wait before the connection is re-established. Sooooo annoying.
I would advise anyone thinking about joining up to avoid it like the plague. The free modem is a good deal, but if the line doesn’t sort itself out soon I will cancel at the earliest opportunity, which is unfortunately 3 months down the line.

i have also signed up to the bethere offer of 24 meg at 24 pounds....i have been told that i will receive my modem and my welcome pack on 01/11/05.i have used 'BOONKOH'S email address as a referer so that i get a month free.... however what he fails to mention is that he too gets a month free and should he get 24 people to sign up,he will get free broadband for life.i am sure that it was an oversight that u didnt mention this but i have to overlook that as it benefits me too.
anyway i will keep you all updated and hopefully i have a far better experience than 'WEAVERMECH'.
ps... if u do want to sign up to be broadband, feel free to use me as a referee for both our benefit..
