Shazbat!!11 It's going dark already. Do you think I could throw a sickie for the whole of the winter if I say I'm suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder?
There's something about hanging around at a bus stop in the dark that makes it
feel cold, even if it isn't really. And it the dark makes it almost impossible to oggle the female students at the bus stops near the uni.
I think I get S.A.D. Winter makes me feel almost suicidal at times.
pitchbloodyblack now
not even 5:30
can't wait till winter...
a little later than this last year:
Daylight Robbery
It occurs to me, as I look out the window at this, the peak of the day, that Daylight Savings Time is not very well named.
A flat, watery, dim, grey, directionless light makes visible rather than brightens everything under the flat, watery, low, grey ceiling of cloud that stretches blandly to the horizon in every direction.
The sun will set in a matter of hours.
It will be pitchblack by 5.
It's been like this for weeks.
It's not even December yet.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm not so don't even bother, but didn't we just spend the whole of summer undergoing the rigour and discipline of Daylight Savings Time?
(Though summer seems but a strange and foreign dream today, ghost of another world, another life... no! No. No, it happened, I clearly recall it. I have photos. And witnesses.)
And yet, after months and months of resolutely putting daylight aside, cautiously saving it for a greyny day in a responsible and forward thinking manner, it's all gone. Already. We have run out halfway through November.
Where's it all gone?
Where have all our hard-earned daylight savings gone?
Is there some daylight robbery gang, burrowing into the government vaults and spiriting away vast quantities of photons disguised as deep-sea squid and dayglo paint?
Or is corruption to blame? Are civil service mandarins sitting around in their fear-and-favour flats basking in our hard-earned sunshine? Are our political masters, or in Mandelson's case, smarters, sleeping soundly at night with the security of years of taxpayers' sunshine squirrelled away in Bermudan bank accounts?
Or is it no more than public service incompetence and waste? Years of underinvestment in aging light storage facilities leaking our summers into the chalky pits of the upper wolds? Or, more likely, policy wonks shining public light in staggering amounts on pointless politically correct moments that no one has the slightest interest in or need for. Daylight savings spunked up against the wall by daylight spendthrifts.
We want to know. We want to know who's responsible. We want someone to blame. We don't necessarily want a solution --this IS England, after all-- but we DO want to punish someone. Anyone. We want answers, goddammit, and we want them sharpish, too, before it gets too dark to read them.

I, on the other hand, don't like the summer all that much. It's my least favourite season. The T&A aside, IMO there's not alot going for it. It's hot, sticky, sweaty and there's generally not alot you can do about it. Fans are noisy, AC also. I can't sleep at the best of times let alone when I'm waking up with sheets so wet I have to check if I pissed myself. But in winter the ugly girls put it all away, snow is great fun and I get to carry more pockets around with me.
You only like the rain because it can disguise the fact that you've pissed yourself

Luckily I live in a town where fresh cut grass in the rain smells like dog piss.

Ugh, you have my sympathies for the Winter ahead. We are in Spring/Summer and it's sweltering. I must agree with Sul, I prefer the air to be a bit crisp, otherwise you feel dopey all the time. I wonder if that's why we Africans are always on "African Time" ;)
