So.
I have a laptop with wireless stuff, and all the gubbins that go with it. I have even made it work and all that.
Woo me.
:)
So, I want to have a similar file structure on the laptop (it is going to replace the PC for a while while it goes into storage) and I want to back up all my files onto it. Easy enough, except I am going to use both for a while, and rather copy back and forth, I want the laptop to synchronise the folders between the two.
Is this easy? Is it a free thing?
I have tried the Windows synchroniser thing, but lost patience cos it only seemed to want to let me synchronise my home page, not the shared volumes I have on there (it wouldn't even see them).
Any ideas, techno-geekery?

That doesn't tell me if it is any good, does it?
Or indeed which one to choose. I need guidance, fuckball, not a list of applications with no more idea than I started with...

The windows method is a fucking cunt and has caused me no end of problems.
Yeeeaaars ago I used to use Laplink who are still going but have branched out into other areas. The synchronsing is still in there though. Look it up. As I said, havent used it in yeeeaaars. Not free but, you know...
I'd get a copy and have a play but I just can't be arsed to help you
that much.

Why not just use your laptop?
Why the need to also use a desktop PC?
Posted by
Brock, around 8th November 2005:
Backup for one.
And I am still using the desktop at the moment because it is more convenient, has a bigger screen and better keyboard, is better to work on on it's own desk and because I don't want to clog up the laptop with the CAD package I am re-learning.
And because I WANT to.

You know you can plug the moniter and the keyboard into your laptop, right?

Brock, around 8th November 2005:
Of course, dumb arse. But why bother when I can just use the desktop?
I didn't think it would be too hard, you see. It seemed relatively simple as a concept, I just didn't know how to do it.
And anyway, the laptop is being used as a iTunes/Tuner at the moment, with Radio 1 off the net going into the Hifi.
:)
Proper expensive MP3 player thingy...

Sul_DUPE1, around 8th November 2005:
You know you can use the Hifi to tune directly to radio 1, right?

Brock, around 8th November 2005:
Hmmmm. If only I'd thought of the blindingly fucking obvious! Thanks Sul!
And, for the stupid who won't understand that gag? No, I don't have a tuner on my Hifi.

But will he be able to make it work?
nah, sorry brock, dunno. if you were on a mac (or linux, *nix), i'd point you at rsync, which is included with the os. but that's no good for you on windows.
