They may know, but we have had numerous discussions about not using real names for anyone unless explicitly allowed.
And, dumb arse, it's not the people that post on here that I am worried about. But this is, in case you were unsure, the
internet and anyone (not just the regulars, whom in the main I trust) could maybe find out what my real name is and make some sort of RL connection.
The reason why I don't want any connection is irrelevant, but I employ the technique of zero links. This has been discussed before, and your pointless thread here makes it more than blatant. The "Which one is Brock" thread the other day was sufficiently ambiguous, but this isn't.
Dumb.
Arse.

Sul_DUPE1, around 13th November 2005:
"The reason why I don't want any connection is irrelevant"
Maybe not but it is, however, a highly sought peice of information.
Come on. Spill it.
I dont know about Brock, but my reason for not using my real name on here is that I have a very web oriented family. My sister, mum and dad are all on msn and all use the internet a lot, I don't want them reading
everything I write.
Brock's reason has more to do with those Mafia hitmen and the incident with the don, a catfish and a small lemon wedge.

I can do but apologise too. Wasn't aware the Brock felt that way, nor Alfie (heh, just had to backspace his real name out. How easy we forget) for that matter.
But I still want to know why "Brock" doesn't want his name plastered all over the web.
I'd like it be known that I am being very good in resisting the obvious 'I'll use your name just to piss you off now' errr "joke".

I am sorry Brock, I didn't know it was so important to you, but I guess I don't post my surname on here because we are the only family in SA with that surname. If somebody posted that on here I would also be pissed off. Really really sorry. I've taken all the references to it out. :(

*gets out wooden spoon*

If you're so concerned about your privacy how comes you'll happily link to your Flickr images which, considering some actually picture you and various friends of yours, could easily give away your secret identity to someone with the super-power of eyesight?
Cal runs a popular corner of the web. Your friends/coworkers/nemesis could quite easily stumble across here.
Posted by
Brock, around 14th November 2005:
I'd thought about that, and consider the chances of someone stumbling upon that is pretty (acceptably) remote. However, the chances of someone stumbling upon it by finding a link to it from here because some dumb fuck used my real name makes it a
tad more likely, doesn't it?
The chances of someone that I don't want to finding my flickr profile from the hundreds of thousands on there (Flickr is only a small, if popular with the neterati, part of the web) is sufficiently obscure. But only just.
You will notice that there are never any references to my, or my friends real names on there or on my blog. Unless people can search the entire web with face recognition software is fairly remote, isn't it? Although I do regularly consider making all photo's of me private to some degree. That is the main reason that I would want a "contacts" level of privacy. If I had that, then all shots of me would be in there.
Oh, and:
"
Maybe not but it is, however, a highly sought piece of information."
Is it fuck. Good try.
:)

Sul_DUPE1, around 14th November 2005:
Heh. To me it seems like an overly-paranoid reaction to a somewhat popular first name. Your fullname I could understand. But whatever, I'm more than happy to curb your paranoid delusions.
:)

Sul_DUPE1, around 14th November 2005:

will be invented. And when it does I will be VERY happy.
Posted by
Sul_DUPE1, around 14th November 2005:
Oh man, all the porn-a-likes I could ever want.
Posted by
Brock, around 14th November 2005:
It's not overly paranoid, I have just made a decision that I had made clear in the past. I thought about this when I first started posting, and if you draw a line somewhere it really needs to be all or nothing. Cal employs the technique of being totally open, and I presume just limits what he puts on here. I do it differently.
*shurgs*
Making the link so blatantly just pissed me off. It is entirely unnecessary, and I always employ the technique that I only ever reveal (despite what I may know personally) that which has been revealed by the individual in this context.
That's why I have never dropped any of my mates in it when they've been playing away, not that they do anymore, but when we were younger...
Posted by
Brock, around 14th November 2005:
Oh and when face recognition searching software comes out, there will be a fairly hefty change in the privacy levels in my Flickr account, I can tell you.
I hope that they've got "search by privacy level" sorted by then, though or that will be a tedious fucking task. (You hearing me, Henderson? :p)
Posted by
Sul_DUPE1, around 14th November 2005:
Without knowing why you need to be so secretive it's still going to seem a little quirky to me. :)
But, whatever, I'm over that now. My new mission is face-recognition.

:/
people can search the entire web with face recognition software is fairly remote, isn't it?
actually, it's not.
everything text and voice on uk mobile phone networks for example is neural-network scanned for naughty patterns re terrorism or crime.
it's just a matter of time before image-matching becomes realtime practical for search engines. and then, every single thing you posted ever will be searchable, even though you posted it when you KNEW it was safe to do so. THEN.
and the key problem is not so much people you like and trust being able to identify you, it is idiots or the (temporarily?) malicious who want to meddle or worse, who have found you by using standard Search techniques. and every. single. thing. you do on the internet is logged and traceable, but not emotion-weighted or intensity-weighted. that casual flippant off-the-cuff reaction you had at 2am after coming home full of piss, will be read as having the same intensity and relevance to your character as something you agonised over for 3 days before posting.
a CEO achieved brief notoriety ~6mths ago for a/ implementing one-strike-you're-out anti-internet-abuse policies in a company, b/ getting sacked for visiting porn sites on his work pc. and as the IT auditors pointed out, all that happened is he looked at a site which threw porn popups. no matter! no job.
i have had blog posts lampooning the states' invasion of iraq re-described as arguing that it was a conspiracy. NEVER underestimate the stupidity and un-reality of the average human being.
and never underestimate how easy it is to track someone down.
cal, for example, logs IP numbers on this site. with a phone call to my ISP and only slight bluffing, he could easily get my address and/or name. if just my address, he can grep one of the publicly available phone books and get my name. with my name and address, he can for only a trivial fee get my full credit card details from any number of 3rdparty websites offering it. with these 3, he could ring from work and put a black mark on my credit history. with that black mark, i would find it extraordinarily difficult to get a mortgage.
i trust cal. based on his behaviour.
i don't trust the whole of the population of the earth. based on the behaviour of a significant proportion thereof.
never, NEVER underestimate the need to keep on-line interactions out of the fusion-flare glare of the search engines.
rant rant
not having a go at syl, btw. she made a mistake and corrected it; no blame. just pointing out generally that the impact of search engines and 3rdparty info providers is much larger than most people think.

why is it so hard for you to believe? a person's personality comes across : oh yes i forgot men aren't attracted to personality ;)
well this thread is not so pointless after all, thanks salty. at least i learnt a thing or two. and for the record, yes, i am nosy, but i don't have a malicious cell in my body. i would never use any information to harm anyone, but at least i have learnt that information provided inadvertantly may be used by others to cause harm. once again, my apologies, it won't happen again. do you accept my apology brock or do i have to grovel some more?
