alludes to the societal/relationship changes, similar to what i said the other day re how "googlisation of info" changes how people are interacting online

hahahaha! You just need a file 13 on the floor next to it. But seriously, given the Technology of today, how about making a prediction of how humans will evolve over the next 1000 years? I imagine this awful pasty creature with wasted muscles and a huge head, long typing fingers...like an alien.
we haven't evolved over the LAST 1,000 years, what makes you think we're going to start NOW?

Picky, picky. Just answer the dog damn question, regardless of how long it's gonna take to evolve.

Errrm I hate to disagree with old Masataka, as wise as he sounds, but this was going on long before Mobile phones were abundant among the yooof.
Speaking from the view point of a Brit, of course.
"This ability to loiter on the streets exists only because of the proliferation of mobile phones." = utter bollocks. It's been going on for years and years. It's a staple of small-town teen life. Johnny and his mates can't decide on a place to go so they all congregate outside the Co-op.
The rest of the article all sounds remarkably like how teen culture has been for certainly as long as I can remember and more than likely a lot longer still.
"unprovoked attacks also draws on primate instincts drawn out by over-use of mobile phones that have stopped people from speaking in favor of sending text messages and thus made them more emotional and unable to express their feelings in words." = icing on the cake. Is Masataka seriously saying that teens were all very articulate and not at all prone to anger and abusing people before the evil of the mobile? And as for not being able to express themselves in words, well I know sometimes they don't look like it but those little characters in text-messages do form words, furthermore I'd say the relatively set-back way text-messaging (and indeed email, chatrooms, forums) work can produce more easier places for emotional out-pour.
So to sum up - I disagree.

Not to say that technology doesn't giveth and taketh away.

Yeah. I've not noticed a massive increase in kids hanging around since I was young. The kids and yobbos just do less shouting (cos they are all texting each other) and the other difference is that they film them beating other poeple up on their mobiles.
Maybe it is a sudden major shift in japanese culture (it is very specific in the article) and this sort ofthing just wasn't prevalent before.

I thought maybe he meant in only Japanese culture but it still seems bizarre to attribute the change to the mobile phone.

I believe technology is yet to present us with more surprises. Specially
mobile phones have mind-boggling effects on it's users.
Unfortunately, spammers have yet to present us with surprises. Click your heels, Dorothy. Click your heels.
