I'm looking for ideas about browser problem on my sister-in-law's PC. She's running XP and logging on to NTL via a cable modem/Ethernet card, and almost exactly 10 minutes after booting up looses the ability to access any web pages. She can still send/receive mail and use Yahoo Messenger, but trying to access any website via IE or Avant browsers just gives a 'Page cannot be displayed' message after about 30 seconds. The downstream light on the modem shows that data is being received, but the only way to re-establish browsing is to rebgoot the PC. She's running the latest version of AVG and I've checked for spy/adware and only had to remove some tracking cookies. I've tried disabling the firewall, but it makes no difference.

Any ideas?

Run this :

netsh int ip reset C:/tcplog.txt

then reboot. Hope it helps!

I take it you've booted up with as minimal apps open as possible.
It's got a horrible whiff of spyware about it. Maybe something else is conflicting.
System restore to a time when all was well?

Yeah, booting up with no apps loading, just basic sys stuff. My own suspicions are also around spyware, but Ad-Aware is bang up-to-date and isn't reporting anything really nasty. I've been keeping an eye on applications and processes, but haven't spotted anything unusual there either.

It's probably something obvious staring me in the face that I haven't noticed yet.

Interestingly, that is roughly what my connection did after they upgraded it to 2M. It worked for a reasonably consistent time, and then wouldn't find anything. IM and the like worked for ages. but anything with a sizeable transfer fell over.

Try just rebooting the router/modem instead and then re-loading everything in the browser and see if it fixes it for a further ten minutes. If it does, then it's the line. My fault was a busted card at the exchange.

(Re Sul's post: in which case, consider installing vmware's newly-free runtime before you do so. then you'll be able to revert effortlessly in future (and/or create new "PCs" for special circs, eg checking out a new potentially-dodgy website) )

Noted. Thanks guys.

I think I did try rebooting the modem early on in this saga, but I'll try it again.

I've resisted calling NTL support so far as I don't relish sitting with a phone glued to my lug 'ole for half an hour listening to Greensleeves and some bint intermittently telling my how important my call is and how they're experiencing an unusually high number of calls atm. But it may come to that.
