i just ran across an old (opened) jar of pickled onions i'd forgotten about. cruel of me, i know.
now, given that this is a traditional english dish, and most of you lot have sampled said fare since you were cherubs in arms, weaned off pickle juice on to pickled mashed apple as tots, d'y'reckon i'm still safe to eat it?
it's about... 2 million years old from the look of it. the previously brown onions now have little white encrustations on them like salt deposits. or maybe scale in a kettle.

Saltation, around 6th December 2005:
and i could murder a pickled onion about now

I'm surprised that such a question would come from you salt...
It's probably safe. All that vineger and salt ...
I wouldn't risk it considering the price of such an item.
Posted by
Saltation, around 6th December 2005:
kinda squashy and floury and not very crunchy at all.
not even the white encrustations were crunchy.

not risk it considering price? the price of THIS item in my hand is FREE! as is this item.
but to go and buy another one from what we not in the business refer to as a "shop", i'd have to pay money.

Or at least,
I would be, anyway.

To get back to the original question of, "Can pickled onions go off?"
Only if you stuff them with the contents of a Roman Candle (or similar) and ignite them.

it's south african, all based around a south african chilli called peri-peri.
Very yummy, very spicy and very addictitice

i can just about handle hot - extra hot is insane

cal must really like them. He used CAPITAL LETTERS! he hardly ever does...
A portuguese South African started Nando's. We have a mixed bag here.
Posted by
cal, around December 2005:
The Portuguese explorers came into contact with African people who introduced them to a little treasure called the African Bird's Eye Chilli. Whether this fiery little chilli was indigenous to Africa or introduced was not certain, but it is certain that the rich and fertile climates were perfect for the Bird's Eye chilli to grow with wild abandon.
The African people called this fiery little chilli, Pili-Pili. The explorers tried in vain to pronounce Pili-Pili but ended up with their own version called Peri-Peri and to this day the Bird's Eye Chilli is still known as Peri-Peri. The settlers immediately experi-perimented with Peri-Peri in their cooking and because much of life revolved around food Peri-Peri became an integral part of their lives.
You can imagine the delight of the culinary-adventurous Portuguese mama's, who were already in heaven with their fresh vegetable gardens and the abundance of wild meat, when they discovered the secret powers of Peri-Peri and it's effects on their cooking. Peri-Peri added flavour and fire to all their food making them feel alive. The women were also delighted with the effect that Peri-Peri had on the libidos of their men and it was no wonder that they were constantly smiling. The settlers were amazed that something so small could be so satisfying.
(close enough)
well i never knew that. i thought birdseye chilis were southeast asian.
we had a tree growing in our back yard in brissie in one place. first time i'd chopped fresh-picked chili. jesus. lines of fire across the joint-creases in the backs of my fingertip knuckles, and around the nails. no WAY did i put those hands anywhere near my eyes till the fingers' pain had subsided.
talking turkey: how green is too green?
