Instead of starting a new thread for all the fun stuff we encounter (are you paying attention, Salti?), why not post them in one thread and reduce the clutter?

Here's a fun one from the Beeb. Shame it's too late to order one for Christmas, but I suppose a cardboard tube from wrapping paper would do.

And he has a fixation with those clothes. I reckon the love of his life used to wear them when they were making their home porn movies, and he accidentally killed her one day while doing a spectacular Italian Chandelier that went horribly wrong. Mock the Stupid
This happened to my husband the other day. He’s a sales rep for a national food distribution company and sells mostly to restaurants. He had the following conversation with one of his customers.

Joe – my husband
Bob – customer

Bob: Hey Joe, I ordered enchiladas and you sent me taquitos!
Joe: Oh, I’m sorry…what does the invoice say?
Bob: Enchiladas. But I opened the box and they’re taquitos.
Joe: Well, they come without the sauce. You need to buy a can of sauce and pour it over the enchiladas and bake them. That’s how we sell them.
Bob: No man, these are taquitos.
Joe: What does the box say?
Bob: Enchiladas.
Joe: (after a minute) Bob, how do you make a taquito?
Bob: You put some meat in a tortilla, roll it up and fry it.
Joe: Ok, how do you make an enchilada?
Bob: You put some meat in a tortilla, roll it up and cook it.
Joe: So all you need to do is put the sauce on the enchiladas and cook them!
Bob: No man, these are taquitos.
Joe: (Getting frustrated) Ok, fine…I’ll issue you a credit and pick up the box.
Bob: Thanks…so can you sell me some enchiladas?
Joe: Apparently not.

Until it's acceptable to walk up to a fat person and tell them how grotesque they look then this sort of thing is just wrong dammit.

that's all.
Posted by Boudicca, 17th January 2006:

Eep. Sorry. (I'm just jealous because I'm not slim.) But I'm sure if there was a fatso on here, there would be comments about that, too.
Posted by Saltation, around 17th January 2006:

no group is more vicious about how women look than women. even as each protests that they are violently against particular "requirements", each enforces it. because they thought they had to show other women.

men, interestingly, typically find what women demand as the ideal woman shape to be much less attractive than what women scream that men should find attractive.

the fashion "industry" is not driven by men. and its models' standard shapes are not imposed top-down but bottom-up by the market. and the "market" is individual women.
Posted by Brock, around 17th January 2006:

You mean it isn't acceptable?

Posted by Saltation, around 17th January 2006:

err, syl, going from beating other people up about it to beating yourself up about it, is not the same as doing something different.

and it IS "fashionable" to be fat in many cultures, and was in european culture a few hundred years ago.
Posted by Boudicca, around 17th January 2006:

Yeah, yeah. I know that. What I meant to say was, it will never be fashionable again. In my humble opinion.
Posted by Brock, around 17th January 2006:

"What I meant to say was, it will never be fashionable again"

Wow. South Africans really do know fuck all about Black people. Try learning about other cultures. Large size is still (TODAY, that is) considered a very attractive feature in more than one African culture that I know of without even looking into it at all.
Posted by Boudicca, around 17th January 2006:

No, that is rapidly disappearing. More and more black women are going towards a western view of this. When I was in the hospital, one of the units was for anorexics and bulemics and the nurses said they are getting more and more black patients. The western stress to be thin is definitely moving to their culture.
Posted by Saltation, around 17th January 2006:

as you point out: "black women"

a huge proportion of african black men are "chubby chasers"
Posted by Saltation, around 17th January 2006:

When I moved from my barebones ugly example to the somewhat more aesthetically pleasing one that I've linked to today, I didn't change any of the backend, nor the login_controller.js file. In designing the system this way, it can be applied to any number of applications, such as a blog comment, a forum, etc.

Also notice that this is seemingly more secure than a traditional login system since the password is never transmitted in plain text."

Er... That's not true, surely?
Posted by Grim..., around 19th January 2006:

Aha, as some nice man has pointed out in his comments:
When you use AJAX from a page which was accessed on a non-SSL connection, the subsequent XMLHttpRequest calls are also not SSL encryped. Therefore, the login data is traversing the wire in clear text. As such, there is at least one attack that will break this, and another that probably would depending on what happens next on the page.
Posted by Saltation, around 19th January 2006:

umm... i thought only the md5 hash was sent, not the pwd. sure the hash is sent in clear but even if you know the seed you still have moderately prodigious time required to bruteforce-guess the pwd, no?

the seed IS sent in clear but varies per attempt, so as long as a login attempt autotimes out within a reasonable timeframe you're fine.

this sounds like someone kneejerking at a keyword without bothering to read anything more.

i promise you all, i didn't touch your passwords

cal: for the iamcal hashes to match, both ends must have the same seed, no? so for my javascript-enabled browser to login, surely it can't be salted- must be using default seed?

Its not. Its just a man pretending to be a woman ;)

It's bullshit. Apparently it's alright to suggest that all IT workers are fucking dicks, but to suggest that a woman isn't capable of being in IT is simply unthinkable.

# An acquaintance tells you a very juicy secret about your best friend? Can you keep the secret?

* Ummm, you can keep the secret for a few days... but that's it.
* Nope, but not on purpose. You just tend to spill the beans.
* No way, you tell everyone what you just found out about your friend.
* If you told anyone, it would be your best friend... who deserves to know the gossip firsthand.
* You would probably share the secret with a mutual friend, but that's it.

I refuse to carry on. Where's my option to lie and actually keep the secret from everyone?

Let's all sing the Fujitsu song.

Here are the words, so there's no excuse for not joining in...

Verse 1:
Let's run out now, to greener fields, where shines a splendid Sun.
We have a dream, a wondrous dream, that gets the best things done.
A wide blue sky is in our heart now,
Open-ness in our soul,
We'll run together going onwards now,
On towards our goal.

Chorus:
Ahhhh Fujitsuuuuu, oh tomorrow is our goal.
.
Verse 2:
Lets join our hands, with everyone, and smile at each new hour.
We have a dream, an endless dream, of youthful love and power.
We want to use all our skill now,
All the strengths unfurled,
We plan uniting all our new techniques,
Over all the world.

Chorus:
Ahhhhh Fujitsuuuuu, forges links all over the world.

Verse 3:
Let's make a bond, from heart to heart, throughout the human race.
An unseen power, now in our grasp, can even conquer space.
We want to find a new harmony,
Both in work and play,
We'll share the fresh things we discover now,
Building a new day.

Chorus:
Ahhhhh Fujitsuuuuuu, GIVES A JOY WITH EVERY NEW DAY!

DIY automatic Dave Barry column:
www.peacefire.org/staff/ben...

Recently in Boonville (motto: "Avaunt, ye reeking toadsucker"), residents reported an outbreak of penguins. Perhaps you think there are no penguins in Boonville. Perhaps you are an idiot.

As the French say, au contraire (literally: "My mother sucks dick better than you do.!"). I have here in my hands a copy of an Associated Press article sent in by alert reader Cathy, whose name can be rearranged to spell "CYAHT", although that is not my main point. "Cathy", by the way, only has the letters "Cay" in in common with "Monica Lewinsky", so there is no other reason to mention Monica Lewinsky in this column.

According to a quote which I am not making up, from Boonville Mayor Aloysius (formally "Mayor Aloysius" and informally "Davo"), penguins ranks as a major crisis just behind cheese, toast and tomato (insert your "pepper" joke here), as evidenced by the following conversation between Boonville government employees:

FIRST BOONVILLE EMPLOYEE: "Dear sir: fuck off."

SECOND BOONVILLE EMPLOYEE: "You. Will. Die."

FIRST BOONVILLE EMPLOYEE: "Ha ha! Prepare to die!"

Fortunately I have a suggestion for Mayor Davo, and that is: lick George Steinbrenner's penis.

No, seriously, my suggestion does not involve George Steinbrenner's penis, although it might involve grinding between gnarled and notched rocks Tobacco Institute scientists. My suggestion is more along the lines of a coup de grace, from the French coup, meaning "partaking", and de grace, meaning "of boat drinks". The procedure (you may want to write this down):

1. eat our garbage
2. I insert the family pet, dipped in flaming gasoline, to the depth of his collar

But instead the Boonville city council (motto: "We'll eat shit and die. when you pry the shrivelled lifestyle out of our cold, dead fingers") thinks that they (the penguins) will flap underwater soon, sending this message to the public, and to the world: "Honk if you hate me.".

Speaking of which, "The Boonville Penguins Outbreak" would be a great name for a rock band.

This RFC is being opened in order to further a centralized discussion concerning actions to be taken against US Congressional staffers and possibly other federal employees who have engaged in unethical and possibly libelous behavior in violation of Wikipedia policies (WP:NPOV, WP:CIV). if you like that, here's something to think about. when i was working on the 3D holo screen, we had contact with a number of eye-tracking systems, as they're necessary for normal 3D systems (tho not necessary for ours). they usually require only a pinhole size camera, usually embedded in the top of the screen. one of them in particular had rejigged his to track the whole body, plus respond differently to particular gestures, plus provide graphical on-screen feedback. he did one pseudo-dance demo where the dancer's gestures would change the over-drawn graphics, so that the left hand would trail a twisting fading transparent cloud of swirling colour then a gesture would change the right hand to suddenly throwing little fireworks when it moved.

imagine all the interface of this linked video, but without needing a touch screen, plus showing teh result in actual float-above-your-desk 3D.
say those bits of this video, where he's stretching photos & windows on his desktop by putting two fingers on them and moving his fingers apart or together. a 3D equivalent might be to reach into a bucket of images, with them all swirling around or say the layer you've reached being de-transparented, then bringing it physically toward you by grabbing with your hand and bringing your hand to where you want it. then stretching it by grabbing both sides and pulling it to the size you want. and it's actually floating in space right in front of you.

me, i reckon that would be pretty bloody awesome, both in terms of "emotional" impact, and in terms of actually useful changes being possible in how people interact with computers (and each other, in the sense that the mobile phone has changed how people can talk to each other, manage their social lives, their security, etc.)

Re - the holo things: I don't think they are much good. The simple fact is, you use less effort with a mouse and keyboard than one of those things - swinging your arms all over the place and stuff. Think of the desk space you'd need...
Posted by Saltation, around 16th February 2006:

well, if you're "physically" just grabbing the images, your arms will be confined to the image space, which is essentially the size of the screen plus about 2/3 of its width towards you and 1/3 away.
Posted by Saltation, around 16th February 2006:

hmm, there's a thought. you'd need some sort of image feedback/discouragement to stop people poking their fingers into the part of the image that's "actually" behind the screen. ardent graphic artists could swap mouse-RSI for holo-brokenfinger :)

They're out, (I'm sure I've seen a couple more instances of them but this is the first one that sprung to my google searches mind).

www.ilounge.com/index.php/r...

But I like to have my cable because I can sling the headphones over my shoulder when quickly talking to folk. I have used such neck braced headphones before and they would sit around the neck comfortably but I, personally, find even slightly-tight things around my neck to be too restricting.

unless, of course, you mean in-ear phones which I'd imagine will be a bit bulky and a pain in the arse to charge individually or find after you've no-doubt lost them.

Actually that reminds me of an idea I had for a gadget. I may email a couple of you engineering/electrical type folk about the feasibility of it.
