Back at work. One small victory though : Joyce came around with scones and I said "NO!"

Whoooopeeee!

okay : %&^*&%$%&^*&

Why did you say 'NO!Whooopeeee"' ?
Posted by Boudicca_DUPE1, around 8th January 2006:

Whoooooopeeee! is an expression of joy that I was able to resist temptation. Hopefully it means I will have the willpower to lose the weight I need to lose this year. You're lucky, you aren't fat and I don't think you'd ever be fat, either. Oh, I see. There I have put the correct punctuation in now. Are you sure you aren't Vic?
Posted by WarHead, around 8th January 2006:

I knew that.

You missed the '£$%*&*$%£' when you time shifted to alter it.

to rebalance your muscle-fat makeup: eat more meat, eat more fat, and exercise explosively rather than cardiovascularly ("burning calories" is a fantasy unrelated to losing weight).

this book has a good set of tables of *measured* bloodsugar impacts of various foods- www.amazon.com/gp/product/2...
(bloody useful if you currently get the post-lunch sleepies)

Thanks Salty.

So I should cycle vigorously for a shorter period of time rather than pedal away slowly for hours. I do remember from reading the Body for Life books that extensive cardio does cause loss of muscle mass. I also have to train with weights, to prevent muscle loss during dieting. I have been doing squats and lunges etc, but I still need to find an excercise bike.

By eating more fat, you mean more of the right kind of fat. Not animal fat! (or trans fats)

I do get the sleepies : because I am a carb junkie. I love bread, rice, pasta. It's a minefield.

yeah. also, you should not cycle. hard to think of an exercise that works LESS of the body than cycling. great for twonks pushing the "burn calories!" meme, not so good if you want to get fit or get healthy.

>more fat"
: i MEAN animal fat.
here's a thought: how about a diet that sits normally on 50-75% animal fat, and has NO vegetables or fruit or plants of any kind except for berries 2-3 weeks a year.
(a) major early death?
(b) or the longest living population on earth, by a long way?

the answer is (b).

Eskimaux

if you eat too much animal fat, your body will flush it out your arse. we are BUILT to eat (rotting) animals, whether this is regarded as PC or not.

what we are NOT built to eat is sugar. sugar exists (in non-trivial quantities, ie outside flowers' nectar) in HOW many plants in the world? (in a free form, rather than tucked deep inside major fibrous structures like in fruit) answer: 2.
glucose is used as an internal transport mechanism by the body, and it has all sorts of dumb/blind feedback mechanisms hung off the back of it. unfortunately, it has the same effect on the tongue's receptors as does dense nutrition. bite into fresh food dense in nutrition, and it tastes Sweet.

sugar is to the tongue what cocaine is the brain-- it fools the receptors into thinking a lot good is happening.

a good litmus test: if you look at chocolate (sugar+fat) and you WANT to eat it, you're hungry for nutrition -- you're not eating enough. eat more, and you won't feel the desire to stuff your face with tongue-drug. if you are fully fed, you don't want dessert.

if you're a "carb-junkie", this is a combination of your body clamouring for real nutrition, plus the mind refusing to eat sensibly, then the sheer hunger overwhelming the position when the drug-foods are seen/smelt.

eat 2 main courses. but no sugar dessert. sugar triggers a major insulin dump, and insulin is the most powerful anabolic steroid yet discovered. it tells the cells of the body to grab out of the bloodstream everything they can. too much puts the cells into panic mode, and they start laying up emergency supplies of energy. most cells cap out quickly; the fat cells take up the slack.

if you want a sugar-fest, go for it. just make it pure sugar and don't eat it anywhere near when you eat food.

oh, and eat slowly. the tongue signals the brain with nerves, the stomach signals the brain with hormones. i'm not saying that's clever, just saying that's the way it is.

give your stomach a chance to let you know when you don't need to eat any more right now.
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around 8th January 2006:

i.e.:
savour what you eat

(a) you'll end up eating a fraction of what you used to
(b) you'll enjoy it vastly more (spend the money saved, if you don't, on better quality food)

That makes a lot of sense, Salty. Except for the animal fat part. This might be fine for Eskimaux who are burning half their energy just to stay warm, compared to little (yeah) old me, sweltering away in the African heat behind a desk all day. And what about the cholesterol? My ticker won't take it. I know what you mean about the cycling though, but it's about all I can get this rump of mine to do at the moment. :(
Posted by Boudicca_DUPE1, around 8th January 2006:

Although, I'm kinda glad you said that, because I just ate three lamb chops. :/

eat all the cholesterol you want. won't materially affect your blood cholesterol.
your own LIVER creates all the non-transient cholesterol in your blood.
cholesterol is another transport chemical, like glucose. in the human bloodstream, the two most significant forms are HDL & LDL: high & low density lipoblah. (they're a type of fat).

if you eat a lot of high cholesterol food, does your blood cholesterol go up or down?
it goes down.
same as eating sugar.

here's how cholesterol works:
the liver, on noticing/receiving post-ingestion post-digestion a heap of food bits in the bloodstream, churns and burns in light of all the other hormones etc it's been receiving (eg your kidneys signal back to the bloodstream how many dead red blood cells they've extracted, so the marrow knows how many to build), and creates body-useful nutrients in a body-usable form.
to get those nutrients TO the body, it uses cholesterol. HDL and LDL are the same chemical: one is high density, the other is low density. the liver creates a LOW density molecule, stuffs its hollow interior with nutrients, and bungs it out the front door.
cell sits and scratches itself somewhere downstream, notices the "grab what you can!" hormones now washing over it, grabs an LDL molecule, pulls the nutrients out of the middle of it, then collapses the molecule physically so that it's smaller, then bungs it out the front door for recycling by the liver.
cholesterol is essentially a cardboard box. after you've taken the stuff out, just fold it up to flatpack for transport convenience, and bung it back to the supplier for the next batch.

also: remember i'm from a much much hotter and stickier climate than you. the only difference when you go to a colder climate is that you MIGHT need to burn more simple fat and carbs to stay warm. that's assuming you don't change the way you dress and that you don't live in houses that make allowances for the possible temperatures. but if you have Heating (and most european countries do), the actual change in dietary needs is negligible.

most australian workplaces, for example, run much colder than do english or french or swedish or finnish or german or austrian workplaces. the jo'burg workplaces i've been in were about halfway b/w the australian and the european marks.

oh, and re the fat:
here's the KEY THING:
humans are BUILT to eat fat (real fat). if you eat too much of it, you stop being hungry. it's that simple.

and you will be startled how little you (feel the need to) eat when you switch to eating real food versus the now-standard crap.

in england i frequently eat till i'm in physical pain from my stomach stretching, and am still hungry. but can eat a single aussie pie (which is about half the size of an english pie) (http://big-island.co.uk/), and not feel hungry.

nutrition.
that's the thing.

My pie's better than your pie!

Wow, food racism. Nice one Salty.

"in england I frequently eat till i'm in physical pain from my stomach stretching"

Sounds like a stupid thing to do.
So you don't take your own nutrition advice then?
Posted by lipsie, around 8th January 2006:

drink water
and don't drastically change your eating habits
just go for moderations

and remember the drugs that make you happy also fuck with your body and added that extra weight. At the end of the day what is more important, happy or a bit extra weight?

but that's also why moderation is important, place too much pressure on yourself by sticking to a diet, dsetting big exercise targets &chainging what you eat = seting your self up for a depression spiral.
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around 8th January 2006:

if you treat exercise and "diet" like a task then, yes, you're setting yourself up for the emotional consequences of "not winning"

alternatively, treat it like you and your own body and what you are eating.
dot. dot. dot.
&c.

alfie: yeah it is sorta stupid, except i'm not willing to slow my life down and my thinking down to the extent concomitant with eating like the english do. you just can't operate at a decent speed if you eat standard english fare. so i keep eating till my nutrition-need is sated.
e.g. i cooked a fairly standard mince thing the other day, but the deer was unusually rich in nutrition, and instead of 2.5 days' food, i got a weeks' worth: i'd be full after only a small portion.
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around 8th January 2006:

i should point out that i dont' give too much of a crap re fat re myself etc., but i DO get the irrits when people start throwing around complete bollocks about how to change their body shape because they're worried about it.

if you want to change it, fine. if you don't want to change it, fine.
but when people start making noises like "oh, i sweated on the bike for 6 hours last week, so i must be good. i mean, i mean, so i should have lost weight. but i didn't. i must just be glandular." -- that gets right up my nose.

oh
"food racism"
you gotta remember that eu+english farms are hugely more productive than aussie farms, on an acreage basis. but: you're basically eating fertiliser. goes in, gets sucked up by plants, goes out. finland, for example, cut its incidence of psychiatric disease by something like 90% in the space of a couple of years by requiring that all fertiliser sold in finland had Selenium added. the soil had been completely depleted of it.

australian farmers etc are just as stupid/short-sighted, but because our soil is so much poorer, we've had to stay with the oldstyle freerange approach for nearly all the animals, and we can't afford to get the vast reams of cropland fertilised with technogubbins-du-jour.
ditto kiwiland, south america, and much of sarthfff ifrika

english animals don't run. english plants grow up in artificially drenched circs.
shortly after scurvy was discovered to be preventable by limes and lemons, the british navy prescribed sulphuric acid to all sailors. well, acidic stuff stopped scurvy, right?

Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around 9th January 2006:

yeah, let's all go to nz. more space too. well, until we all arrive.

if you eat too much sugar your cholesterol _balance_ (b/w H&L DL) goes out of whack. the liver keeps being triggered by the insulin to dump cholesterol into the blood even though it has nothing to put into it. this excess _can_ clog narrow arteries over time. but again, it doesn't occur because of eating cholesterol.

Thanks a mil for the info Salty.

lipsie, I don't think these pills are contributing to my weight. Reason being, I was on them for a long time a few years ago, I was going to Gym and eating properly and my weight did not increase, in fact I lost nearly 12kg. I have been extremely sedentary over the last two years, as well as overeating. I also lost 16kg while in hospital, which I have since regained. I will email you the name of the pills I'm taking, but the doctor said they were amongst the group that doesn't cause weight gain. Oh well, I'll never know until I at least change the things I have some control over.

/chomps on a carrot stick :( At least I'm not going for a gastric bypass like my friend in Perth did. Ouch that must hurt.
