Vegetable Oil filled PC.
Totally Working
Totally Silent
Totally the coolest thing ever
(apart from the upgrading nightmare)
i'm sure i saw this, or one just like it, last year or the year before
good, innit!
i wonder...
[chain of thought: diesels can run on vegetable oil and...]
you could use diesel fuel too, couldn't you? and it's probably got better heat conductivity than vege.oil, so you could run your chips faster and hotter.
not much fun for the poor bastard who has to upgrade it, tho. "oops, my computer leaked"
They were suggesting engine oil as the best thing to use. They had reasons for using vege oil but can't remember what they were, certainly nothing technical.
They also suggested that you could have a really slow fan churning the oil up which would dissapate the heat better.
You are right about upgrades being a nightmare
but i guess it could be used in these non upgrade boxes. Like some of these media centre pcs where the idea is it sits under the telly and just does media tasks. Could cut down on noisy fans.
Although it might make the room smell of chips. Which some people might consider to be a negative.

If the fans fail in a standard PC it can make the room smell like burnt chips.
