Grim…: "race car mechanic" -- is that the broc-kconnection?
and how do you trap a clay pigeon? ask it about its opinion of blacks on national tv?
Posted by
Grim..., around 28th January 2006:
Brock connection? I don't know Brock IRL or anything...
And to trap clay pigeons, some man with a shotgun says 'pull' you press the buttons to launch a clay.

What cars did you work on Grim?
surely you should then have been the clay pigeon set-free-er-er?
"borrrrrrn freeeeeeee, free as the wind bloooo*BANG* good shot, sir! would you like to move up a grade to our phull-steel-jacket pheasants?"
"thank you, no. i'm still missing a leg from last time."
what would you bait a clay pigeon trap with, anyway? water? a kiln?

umm...
not meaning to be insulting...
but, with NO visible way in (not even in source), and a noomeeja-style front and faux-superior "supporting" page, this REEKS of everything that made Flash and the BLINK tag an automatic cringe for the 99.9% of the internet outside a small self-regarding self-aggrandising noomeeja circlejerk.
ok, that's harsh language, but i live a stone's throw from shoreditch and Nathan Barley wasn't a comedy for me but a documentary. so i'm a bit(!) over-jaded perhaps.
is there something i'm missing?

Grim: So 1995? With DPR? Good looking car, the F1.
Was there a bloke there called Rob Palermo? Possibly a No 1 mech that year (although maybe later) and a Truckie called Sharkie? (I sold him a Capri 2.8 injection). They were certainly there in 1997 (DPR ran the Panoz prototypes that I built and then the race cars).

No Rob or Sharkie at DPR (Dave Price Racing, fact fans), but I was only about during the school holidays in 95 =]
Salt: I think maybe you are... I only go there to try and find out when my 360 will be delivered (if ever).

Actually, the '30 years ago' thing is quite complicated really. I mean, I like the technology we have today, whereas the tech we had 30 years ago was stone-age by comparison. But at that stage we weren't almost at the 'point of no return' with the environment and I hadn't begin the slow bodily deterioration which is gradually accelerating now.
Then again, I earn comparatively more than I did then ..... duh, I don't really want to continue with this train of thought.

What a load of tosh. What on earth makes you think we have done significant damage in 30 years to put us any more near the 'point of no return' than now?

So was everyone which is why the panic about global warming now
also wasn't 30 years ago when everyone worried themselves sick about nuclear war?

Brock, around 1st February 2006:
There are many naturalists, including Sir David Bellamy, and a strong opinion within the scientific community that holds the feeling that due to the fact that the climate has varied significantly in temperature for millions of years to no pattern we can determine, that to try and attribute it to 'greenhouse gases' is utterly stupid, because we have no proof at all that the temperature wasn't fluctuating anyway, and we have had no effect on it.
We observe a change in climate. We assume it is us. We don't
know, but some are jumping on the bandwagon with (good) otehr causes. Yes we are polluting the world, but there is always the possibility that we are affecting a natural change by a couple of percent at most.

It's a bit like saying there's no proof that smoking causes cancer (which there isn't, no conclusive proof anyway).
Perhaps it's just that 30 years ago I was in blissful ignorance.
So was everyone which is why the panic about global warming now
actually, the global warming warnings were turning into largeish movements 50odd years ago. bear in mind that CFCs were banned almost globally 30odd years ago: takes a HUGE amount of preceding lobbying (and prepreceding awareness) to get even one big country to that point, let alone all of them.
i have to agree with wh: everyone starts off thinking the world is as it was presented/taught to them as kids, and as they are disabused by reality the usual habit is to think the world has changed, rather than one's knowledge of it.
this is why every single generation is convinced that sex and drugs started with their own generation, and the discovering of widespread hankypanky decades and centuries before is a watershed for most people. ;)
climate change
i ran across an excerpt from a surveyor's journal not too long ago. it was written around 1800, as he was updating some canadian coastline maps.
he noted THEN that the preceding maps used by the whalers and prepared ~ century earlier, showed the permanent ice completely blocking the harbour he was sailing into, and that the glaciers on the old map were markedly longer than he was seeing.
in usual bandwagon PC herdthink, the journalist citing it then went on to claim that, because there'd been about the same amount of position change in the ice since then, that that was proof that global warming was occurring because of man.
problem is... the journal was written almost before the industrial revolution; certainly well before so far as that continental area was concerned.
me, i'm convinced we're making an impact (aeroplanes!!), but not so convinced that we're the major cause of the environmental changes we're seeing.

"every single generation is convinced that sex and drugs started with their own generation"
but the 70s with the advent of the pill and some pretty wild pharmacological creation introduced a whole new freedom" which does in one sense make 30 odd years ago pretty fun.
heh. but the pharmaceutical hey-day was the 50s and the pill was the 60s... wh should have been rolling in (on) stoned women 30 years ago

Damn, I missed an opportunity there. I should have said that it's only in the last 30 years that Brock has been spouting hot air.
But I didn't.

it's not true either -- he was a bottled-up fart for a lot longer beforehand
