As it's (maybe) perfectly legal to listen to someone else's MP3 once and then delete it, I thought we could share =]

So, here are two songs that I like at the moment.
First is If I Survive by Hybrid - excellent intelligent house music.
And second, the scarily solid Cage Del Mar (Andy Whitby Vs. Serge & Withenshaw Remix) by the Masif DJs. It's great.

Let me know what you think (I'd imagine Cage Del Mar is going to scare people) and share your own!

Don't forget to delete the song after you listen to it!

I think that might be a rather dubious legality. Though the BPI may not be primarily bothered with downloaders(leechers if you like) at the moment, I think they still might get a little pissy with the providers of infringing material. Though judging by your links nobody's going to download them anyway so you're safe ;)

Actually, the first one isn't scary-house, it's very, very good.
Go on, try it.

Meh. Not my cup of tea.
Posted by Grim..., around 7th March 2006:

Well, fair enough.
So - any other contibutions?
Posted by Brock, around 7th March 2006:

First one: S'ok. Pleasant enough but not my thing. A bit undemanding.

Second one: Massively derivative and a totally toss opening. It goes downhill from there, although I enjoyed the small part of un-fucked with bit of Cafe Del Mare. It is all squeaky and awful. It may as well be Scooter, it's so fucking shite. And the OTT drum machine stuff makes me want to punch the programmer. I would call them a musician, but this sort of utter dog shit just brings to mind the image of a computer game. I always picture/imagine that this is what would happen if you cross wired a games interface with a mixing deck. This is the result of a 13 year old playing for 4 minutes or so like he does in GTA Vice city.

Ugh. Remind me never to go to one of your Disco's if that is representative.

Scooter rule =]

And no, I don't play that sort of stuff, but at the moment that's my hangover cure song. I'm trying to get hold of a version without the woman singing (that was added by the DJ, it's from Fabric's latest CD). The 'OTT drum machine stuff' is meant to be OTT, it's like Slash going nuts on his electric gee-tar.

But yeah, the singing doesn't really fit unless you've listened to the rest of the album.
Posted by Grim..., around 7th March 2006:

Oh, and "don't come to one of my disco's".

Ta =]
Posted by Sul_DUPE1, around 7th March 2006:

Listened to about two thirds of the second song purely to hear the
"it's like Slash going nuts on his electric gee-tar" part.

That's bollocks, mate and you probably know it. I appreciate a good drum solo every now and then. To choose one would have been a minutely better thing to say. To attribute a bloke setting several synth toms to repeat heavily with some sort of a flanging effect is just a few worlds away from an accomplished guitarist playing an improvised solo. Or a drummer for that matter. It's awful. I could do it given 5 minutes and that includes the mixdown and upload time. And I'm the worst drummer I know.
Posted by Brock, around 7th March 2006:

Well said, Sul. I though that response was utter shit, too.

A guitar solo is a part of a song that demonstrates musical talent. Holding your finger on a "drum hit" key is no such thing. It's not OTT in that sense.... it's

just

shit.

Oh and is that song, or a version of it, on one of those playstation dance mat game things because I'm sure I've heard it before and "danced" to it.

> As it's perfectly legal to listen to someone else's MP3 once and then delete it,

not in england or australia or AFAIK america or canada

(i am now going to pour myself a fresh cider and read the whole thread, not just the first post)

EDIT: couldn't be arsed: good night

I rather liked 'If I survive.' Good to surf to and, as Brock said, not too demanding.

Not keen on the second one. I hate that fucking drum sound on all those dance tracks, and this is a worse abomination than most.

If I had somewhere to host it I'd put up Liquid Tension Experiment's 'When the water breaks' for your delectation, but I haven't, so I can't.

I didn't mean it was technically the same.
I meant that house-y people like the mad drum bits like rock-y people like guitar solo's.

And that's pretty obvious from the context. Hey-ho.

Salt: In England, I'm pretty sure you've got 24 hours.

I would look it up, but I can't be arsed =]

geez, that cider knocks you about.
well, me about.

now that i've had a chance to actually listen to what you posted:
1/ not a big fan. i found it quite dull.
2/ i quite like this one. good latenight pilledup house-ish stuff. i'm hitting a party in brighton tomorrow which should be fairly majorly in this theme in all respects.

but i'm not particularly interested in whether something is technically difficult or not, merely whether its effect on me is positive or negative and in what environments. just because something is similar to something else doesn't make it automatically bad for me.
i realise this makes me highly uncool.

"Salt: In England, I'm pretty sure you've got 24 hours."

I'm pretty sure that is a poor urban myth. For one thing it's totally unworkable from an enforcement standpoint. Also it's just daft.

re "derivative", check out this recording:
the "Amen Break"
2 things:
1/ music: first 15 seconds: slightly jawdropping moment when he PLAYS the Amen break. HOW many times have you heard that??? delete it and Jungle disappears!
2/ implications for music and copyright for the foreseeable future: gets pretty dull after that, until suddenly in the last 25% he suddenly revs up into an excellent analysis and prognostication for how the previous laxness that allowed musicians to use this and hence create all sorts of new music and uses, no longer exists. and then he runs through some of the consequences, but intelligently and concisely, and in some ways i hadn't thought of (who am bored to tears by much of the pseudoprotests re DRM). well worth listening to, if you're in thoughtful mode.
the last minute in particular is quite profound, with some interesting parallels drawn with science and with culture generally.

and just some lovely music:
Águas de Março
Brazilian singer: Elis Regina. Song: "Waters of March" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, apparently it's a Bossa Nova classic. Lifted off a DVD called "MBP Especial 1973". And apparently when the track was recorded, she was falling in love with the pianist.

hmm one site says:

"Many myths exist around what is legal and what is not. One of them is that it is legal to keep an illegal mp3 for 24 hours if you delete it after that. Many webmasters post a disclamier stating this, but it it not true"

another says its ok.

:shrugs:
All the laws are pretty unworkable.

The Amen break! It is jungle!
I'm not sure that file needed to be a video, though.
Original nuttah!
/dances
God, I love jungle! I keep forgetting =]

Song: "Waters of March" by Antonio Carlos Jobim

Art Garfunkel did a nice version of this (in English) on his 'Breakaway' album in 1975. The whole album is very mellow, if you're in to that kind of thing.

Today, I will mostly be listening to songs by Moke, for example Fluicide, although this is not the very best of their work.

Oooooh, I just found the video to the Hybrid track. Tense!
