This is the title from a documentary on Ch4 next week. Its apparently about the people that jumped from the Twin Towers instead of choosing to fight it out with the smoke, flames, kerosene, inane forwarded emails and falling building.
What I gathered from the short advert is that it appears the media dropped the story of the people who jumped after the initial day and decided that they wouldnt focus on the folk that did as their compassion stories thereafter. Maybe a sign of cowardice. I dont know. Sounds a little cynical to me but like I say - I only got this from 10 seconds of advert.
Anyway. I dont know if I'd have jumped myself. Actually the IT dept is never allowed near windows so I doubt I'd have got the choice.
I was actually surprised that noone jumped out of the building with a parachute. I can imagine that if there were any people with a parachute, they would have loads of guilt on their concience if they had to leave friends and coworkers behind..
I would think that if you were faced with burning alive, jumping would seem like a better option. At least you would die quickly as apposed to slowly roasting to death.

Huh? No comprendo.
Sorry Mr WH. I'll break try to break it down again. That wasnt exactly easy to understand and I obviously wasn't feeling the comma last night.
Ok so, standard channel 4 ad, next Thursday at 9, The Falling Man.
What they appeared to be getting at was that on the first day of the papers reporting what happened they showed the images of the jumpers. Then nothing mentioned about them. The story wasnt followed. The families spoken to were all of the folk who stayed in the building. This documentary wants to investigate why.
probably because everyone who saw the jumpers had the cold shakes for days afterwards. mate of mine had to take time off work.
Do you think it is percieved as cowardly that they jumped?

The suicide thing is a bit academic. I think I'd like to argue my case with God/St. Peter/whoever's on duty on the day, along the lines of, 'I was gonna be dead in a couple of minutes anyway, and I was wondering if you might perform a miracle and save my life if I took a leap of faith.'

Can't understand why noone picked up on this before. Who the hell takes a parachute to work? Or did Basejumpers Inc. have offices in there?
I bet they all had parachutes but the heat from the flames shrunk the nylon to nothing almost immediately.

uk basejumper died yesterday when his parachute failed. maybe it was a british one not rated for double digit temperatures.

/me prolapses
Well that was interesting. Not great.
They spoke about how the papers got a lot of reader criticism for printing (mainly this one photo in particular) of a jumping man heading head first for the ground. The TV media didn't show any jumping images, only chose to report witness accounts of it. In this doc they showed several bits of video footage which were very chilling. Then there was the controversy from several journalists who objected the jumpers being airbrushed out of the pictures. One writer called up to see if he could get the number of jumpers (not sure where he called) but got the answer that they prefer to say that no-one jumped but rather got blown out or some such.
Then some Canadian reporter tracked down the jumper's identity and wrote a life and death piece. Which was proved wrong by another reporter who tracked down the real identity. The family from the initial ident were fucked up by it all and then settled when they learned it wasn't him. Family ethics and stuff. Another guy noticed his wife as one who jumped and found that as more of a closing chapter than not knowing how she died.
The thing that got me was that they showed this image in The Morning Call on the 12th because someone said "Its a Pulitzer prize winning photo, that's why we need to print it". That sounds fucking awful. But the AP could be worse because this was one of a series of photos and it was chosen because the guy looked quite serene and beautiful, a man accepting his fate. Looking at the other photos from his fall it was just a lucky shot and, had people seen the whole series, it would've been another story.

Thanks for that. I'm glad I didn't bother to watch it.
Could you influence the way you landed by the way you jumped? If you go feet first, do you land feet first or is your head so heavy that gravity spins you over. Would it make any difference how big your head was?
I am shocked by the cruelty of some of the comments made by the sickos on this site. Whoever the falling man was he was a human life created by God and unique, and no-one deserves to die like that. Americans are not intrinsically bad, they are victims of their own government as we all are. There is a limit to what we can do to control our leaders. I'm British, I didn't vote for Blair, I don't like his war, and I think Bush is sick. I don't hate Muslims. I disapprove of much in my country's political history but I had no power to stop what was done, other than by voting against political parties supporting the things I'm opposed to and protesting. One of the men the falling man is believed to have been was a gentle, devout, and Godly man from a devout and good family. I know this as fact. May God forgive those of you who make jokes about parachutes and ashphalt angels. May you end more happily than he did. Only God knowsif you deserve to
Well that told me. I can hear the gentle clicks of disaproving tuts from here. How bad a person I am. Of course it could just be that I'm dealing with the shock in a manner that I find suits me best which is dark humour. Not that you'd understand that you joyless so and so.
Oh and there's no such thing as God - gutted!

"One of the men the falling man is believed to have been was a gentle, devout, and Godly man from a devout and good family. I know this as fact."
Bit of inconsistency there, isn't there? Do you know as 'fact' that he was a religious man? Or do you know as 'fact' that it is
believed he was?
And, more to the point, what the hell does that have to do with anything? Do you think it is more or less sad that he was supposed to be a devoutly religious person when he died? The fact that you even mentioned it makes me think you believe that it matters. Aren't all people equal in your religion?
Hypocritical twat.

Unless he was pushed, I guess.
Yes all people are equal religious or not. Even if everyone who died at WTC had no faith at all they did not deserve to be murdered. And yes I do know he was devout, and yes it was a fact. I apologise to you Brock for incorrect and inconsistent use of language. No I'm not in the least joyless. I have a great sense of humour, comedy is my favourite thing. I just don't think murder or death is funny. I love all people of all nations all faiths and colours and do not judge anyone, certainly not those who disagree with me. I was wrong to call anyone a sicko. I was just writing with extreme and irrational emotion and in my own way I was cruel too I'm sorry.
A twat incidentally is the Old English word for a wedge. and the other word you want to call me means the same by the way it's just an english corruption of the Latin version of the same word. No words are really rude when you look at their origins

Grim..., around 24th April 2006:

Not all of them were murdered.
The guys who jumped, for example, commited suicide. Fair enough, their options were limited, so let's call it 'suicide under duress'.

hey, "decent person". my gran used to joke about being ready to die. then she did. by your lights, that makes her a sick person and a candidate to burn in hell.
please don't confuse "religion" with "church". jesus would be turning over the altars in england and kicking down the baptist fonts in middle america if he was alive today. "church" is about the fear-driven need for security and the status-driven need to impose your will on others. as you (& your chosen nickname) very neatly demonstrated.
My Gran also used to joke about being ready to die. She used to say "Bring that bucket and let me kick it!"

Posted by
gepr, around 2nd May 2006:
That's a contradictory statement. On one hand you say that America, as a whole, is one continent but then go on to, it apears, say that South America is a continent. Both right depending on who you talk to but you have to stick to one definition or the other or your agument sort of doesnt make sense.

I'll wait for Brock to come back and tell Gepr what he was thinking so I can understand it.
(Brock: South America and the South of America - there's a difference?)
Posted by
Brock, around 2nd May 2006:
The south of america would be Florida and Texas and the like. The Deep South as it is often referred to. South America is Brazil, Argentina, Chile et al. Very much not the same thing are they?
The lack of capitalisation due to america (as in the usa) may be confusing the issue (the wankers are doing it again! ;) ), so we'll go back to the original as the capitals are important.
Malawi is in south Africa. It is NOT in South Africa (SA). The first is part of a continent, the second is a country.

Grim..., around 2nd May 2006:
Um, I was under the impression that compass directions were always capitalised.
A quick look around shows that I am very much wrong (or everyone else in the world is).
I've a feeling I was told that at lower school.
Useless lower school.
So that's what's caused all these problems.
Phew - glad we got that sorted out, eh?

You should go back and burn your school, citing mental trauma from getting bitch slapped in public. Some namby liberal will take pity on you and try and wrap you in cotton wool for a week and then let you go scott free.
same problem as the south australia/South Australia muddling. SA is a state towards (but not the most) south of australia. and also has the same acronym as the jo'burg place. *tsk*

THE TRUTH??

Grim... I agree with the capitalisation of compass directions cos that's wot we learnt at primary school. Then again, who cares if the rest of the world disagrees, after all we drew (and redrew) most of the maps.
;)
Much as I hate to agree with Brock, you are wrong Grim. You know full well I was referring to South Africa and not Southern Africa.
