Discussion » QUIZ: how much is this awesome Digital Watch?

This is a read-only copy. The forum ran on iamcal.com from 2000 until its database was lost in 2016, and this topic was rebuilt from copies saved by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. Some replies may be missing, and its dates are approximate.

pointless yet awesome retro-tech: the world's first wholly-mechanical watch (ie just springs and gears, no electrickery) with a digital display.

digital watches are cool again! where's me flares...

OK, so here's the rules of the quiz:

• post your guess BEFORE you click the link to find out.
• DON'T then post the answer.
• you may, if you choose however, post your reaction.
• subsequent guessers can then adjust their own guesses by assessing the economic weighting of your emotion.

My reaction: It's a bit unwieldy, and do you have to strap it to your wrist with elastic bands?

And 'accurate to within 4 seconds a day'! What bloody use is that?

How appropriate. It's made from Titanium and you'd be a tit to buy one.

And the bidding starts at ... $500.00

$500.00...do I see $550.00?

My reaction : oh my dear sweet heavenly god!

It's not exactly pointless, I mean it does tell the time.

But then so does this, and to within +/-30 seconds per month and only cost about a tenner.

It has a little display on the right of the dial that shows the time, where the 'date' number on old analogue watches used to be.

£7000 - I'm probably well off. Clicks.

Wasn't entirely convinced by the 'why does it cost'paragraph either

Posted by Grim..., around March 2006:

Now that Alfie's given it away (although it would be more like a 1/4 price sale), can we start discussing?

HOW THE FUCK MUCH? (I'm impressed with how close I was, though)
Posted by WarHead, around March 2006:

Why? It was just a lucky guess.
