I agree with WH. Totally jumped on as an opportunity to further a cause.
His apology was "unremorseful and insufficient", campaigners have said.
The guy could apologise personally to every Jew in the world and it wouldn't be enough. They've seen it as an opportunity to further their cause. Cool, campaign for toleration, I'm all for it. How about some compassion for the guy who's relapsed after a pretty good stint though? You know, if we're talking about toleration...
Posted by
Sul, around July 2006:
Hmm - I've just realised that 'toleration' has a slight 'putting up with' context. I mean it more in a 'harmonious' way.

To make a point:
Guy 1: Mel Gibson was arrested drink driving the other day and made some anti-semitic comments.
Guy 2: Wow. How has the Jewish community taken it?
Guy 1: Don't know, they're still too busy counting their money.
So that's a pretty stereotypical and very poor joke. But it's very public and could be deemed offensive. I'm not going to have anyone breathing down my neck though am I? The guy made a mistake and has apologised. Ok so we don't know what he's said yet (though I've yet to look on The Smoking Gun) but it really seems to me that he's being scapegoated. The guy supports the biggest Jew of them all, and he's at best semi-fictitious.
It's news because it's Gibson.
Posted by
syl, around July 2006:
Yeah. He said something along the lines of
"Fucking Jews! The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world!" and then asked the arresting officer :
"Are you a Jew?"
But the head of Disney, (which is releasing his new movie Apocalypto), has said he is willing to forgive and forget and continue production.
The trouble is a lot of very powerful executives in Hollywood are Jewish. He might find it hard to get himself another producer.

I think the fundamental question is, "how pissed was he when he was stopped?" If he was very pissed, anything he said could be construed as being the drink talking. We all talk tripe when we're sloshed, do we not (even those of us who normally talk sense, I mean).
If that is the case, the public ridicule should be enough. Sheesh, everyone makes the odd mistake. If he'd actually gone out and tried to beat the crap out of some particular ethnic type person, it'd be a different matter.

Good point, miki. Specially celebrities. It's asking for trouble, innit.
But hang on a minute. Isn't Mel Gibson the one who made that big anti-semitic Jesus film? Of course he's going to rant on about them when he's drunk. It's like Paul Mc Cartney ranting on about what a bastard Mark Chapman is.
Posted by
syl, around 5th August 2006:
Well, I didn't see it because people told me it was horribly violent and I wasn't in a good frame of mind to start with. (As it is, I was going around telling people I was God, can you imagine if I'd seen that film?)But I was told it was more anti-Roman than anti-semitic? Although I do remember Jewish people being upset by it.
jesus's crucifixion was just another jew-on-jew crime. it's surprising it even made the papers.

I have seen it and I wish I hadn't
I don't usually have problems with violence or gore in films but this is one of the most sadistical and horrible films I've seen and I recommend not watching it.
I have no strong opinions of the content of the film, but the way it was filmed.
example: yes according to the bible jesus was flogged, yes we all know what that word means, there are several ways to show this on film and the one they chose is to stick the camera right on top of the action of a man getting strips of skin ripped off over and over and over and over etc again in addition to showing the people doing it enjoying the whole process immensly
sickening
just as bad is the fact that you have to have really strong bible knowledge to even get half of the story as it only covers the very last days of jesus and explains nothing of the backstory or history, so it doesn't serve any sort of purpose in my opinion.

that doesn't mean I boycot mel gibson films (as an actor) but Im wary of the one he makes/directs.
that all has nothing to do with getting into a car drunk where you could potentionally kill other people.
again, he was arrested for drunk driving and speeding and I find that's worse then making stupid remarks or even making bad films.

I agree. I guess I will give TPotC a miss.
He does seem to be very sorry for what he did and has got himself into rehab. I feel badly for him as a person, that he's allowed it to happen. I hope he manages to straighten himself out.
Drink Driving is pretty stupid. I have absolutely no sympathy for someone who's going to drink drive.
Being exposed as a drunk and going into rehab, for some reason, doesn't really affect your Hollywood career as bad as making offensive remarks.
He doesn't sound like a very nice person. But if he made good films, I don't think it would matter. Take T.S. Eliot for example, jew-hater who wrote some darn good poems nevertheless...

He used to be an admin officer in our regional accounts office just before JD really began to take off. He left a couple of months before I got promoted to accounts supervisor on the section he worked on. So, not much of a connection really. At least, not as good as the John Squire/Ian Brown connections.
John lived next door to me for a couple of years when the Roses were gaining popularity. We used to cat-sit each others' pets if either of us was away and I used to go in and close his curtains and put his lights on at night when he was on tour, to make it look like the place wasn't uninhabited. He once cleaned our kitchen because plaster dust from renovations of
his kitchen managed to get through a hole in the wall and covered everything in ours. Oh, and I had to jump start his Merc once when he'd been away for a while and his battery was dead. After he moved out he always sent us any new releases, either from the Roses (not that there were many of those) or the Sea Horses, and his latest design T-shirts.
Perhaps the best thing we got was tickets for the very last Roses gig at the Manchester Apollo, and passes for the after-show party, although we also got tickets to the first Sea Horses gig in Manchester too.
And I once lent a shot-gun to the drummer from Herman's Hermits, but that's another story.

Joel Douglas, the less famous son of the actor Kirk, was performing at the Comedy Store and getting increasingly frustrated by the audience reaction. He started shouting: "You can't do this to me, I'm Kirk Douglas's son!" At which point some wag stood up and said: "No, I'm Kirk Douglas's son." Then someone else stood up, and so on.

Filipino 'mystic dwarf' judge loses appeal
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/a...
A Philippines judge who said he consulted imaginary mystic dwarves has failed to convince the Supreme Court to allow him to keep his job.
Florentino Floro was appealing against a three-year inquiry which led to his removal due to incompetence and bias.
He told investigators three mystic dwarves - Armand, Luis and Angel - had helped him to carry out healing sessions during breaks in his chambers.
…
"They should not have dismissed me for what I believed," Mr Floro told reporters after filing his appeal in May.
The judge said he had made a covenant with his dwarf friends that he could write while in a trance and that he had been seen by several people in two places at the same time.
Judge Floro reportedly changed from blue court robes to black each Friday "to recharge his psychic powers".
In a letter to the court he said: "From obscurity, my name and the three mystic dwarves became immortal."
