hey graphics gurus -- i'm having trouble believing these are real : what do you reckon?

englishrussia.com/?p=241

i just can't believe a single gust of wind would be so suddenly and sufficiently cold as to snapfreeze a wave.

in other news, flickr's uploader's driving me up the fucking wall. nearby building site is throwing electrical interference (radio plus cable) so my network is not constant. as soon as there's a hiccup, uploadr cancels teh upload and then refuses to re-upload -- meaning i have to quit it, re-start it, re-drag in the batch, re-enter the tags, then re-upload. each and every single time. since yesterday evening, i have been able to upload a total of about 6 photos, despite running the uploadr for most of the time.

i am unable to fathom why code coming from such a sophisticated shop and designed specifically for network transfers falls over on simple transient network hiatuses.

hiatii?

no, wait, that's where zombies come from

The foam and splash are intact - Complete bollocks. Nice look though.

On the third photo down there are drops of water.
If it were frozen, then the ice would be floating in mid-air.

The birds flying around the waves show normal behaviour. There is no reason for them to do this with frozen water. There is no way they are getting any food out of it then. In one shot, there is even a bird in the water, and it ain't dead.

Also, water doesn't freeze like that. Not possible. It has to freeze gradually, or proper codl places (North/South poles) would show something other than flat, dull ice. It looks like pollution of some sort, to me, assuming no potatoshop.

I love the tags... "amusing disaster nature sea" hmm amusing disasters.

If the title hadn't said they were frozen it wouldn't have crossed my mind that they were frozen.

well, i've seen sea birds fly like that over actual frozen ocean so don't regard that as a deal breaker. and i've seen waves in a wave-tank frozen mid-wave in a demonstration using liquid nitrogen: it's merely a matter of how much temperature you can transfer how quickly. so that's not theoretically a deal breaker either, although implying, as i said, a VASTLY cold and sudden wind. and i saw no drops mid-air (grim, can you point out where you saw them? i still can't see them in the 3rd pic).

foam though i would have thought would be too weak to support itself if frozen.

and the sheer scale of it and the sheer extreme of low-temperature gust (ie, to the point of liquid atmosphere) given that the shapes were maintained, were the primary arguments against it, and for me the clincher.

but i was mostly wondering whether the photoshop gurus here could see any photoshop telltales.

these are real

Just look at where the wave starts to break on most of the pictures to see miracle anti-gravity icedrops.

And the ninth picture down, just look at the amount of spray coming off those rocks!
Posted by Saltation_DUPE1, around August 2006:

those aren't drops -- they're foam, and they're connected to the wave. when surf breaks you don't get "drops"

but yeah that 9th one's a clincher. i regarded the 10th one as 99% definite, but only glanced at the wave part of 9, didn't pay attention to the rocks.

still, i was hoping for some photoshop telltales too. oh well.

I just noticed it's also been saved in the 'Fiction' category of the site...

Also, I found where the photos were originally uploaded and from what i understand, the sea was frozen but the waves were moving, hence their bizarre colour..

ahhh.... that would make a LOT of sense -- ice slush
