I realise you're a busy man, but any chance of an ignore type feature here? Others may like to play with the trolls but until that stab-people-in-the-face-over-the-internet feature comes along, I'm going to have to beg for an interim measure.
Actually, is Yahoo working on the stabbing thing at all? I'd be happy to beta test.
I'm second to that. Please give me the power to I got home early from work. I thought about masturbating but it's so humid. I hate to break a sweat, when it's just me. My friend gave me her old air conditioner because it drips too much, and it's noisy. I cranked it up and stripped. I checked my e-mail in the nude while I waited and an hour later it was freezing in here. I've got to put all my clothes back on. do something about them using ice and fire
trouble is, "ignore" just encourages the trolls. which tends to put off any useful potential new members. in a social-engineering sense, not only do you not get
free pizza, but you essentially end up with the worst case scenario of iamcaller hardcorers talking only to themselves, but attracting newcomers over time who then gradually get hived off into a separate sub"culture" because hardcorers' responses seem disjointed from the generally-visible thread contents and because the trolls will be that much keener to interact with them.
me, i'm a fan of cal's previous code. i realise it may have been much uglier under the hood, but it did DELIVER a great forum environment.
i think Flickr got rather in the way of this current version :)
maybe we could regress the code? i'm happy to help with any datamapping work to merge iamcal1&2 into 3. if it's all relational i can probably do it myself if i get both's ddl.
alternatively, just implement The Button.
in css.

Sul, I may have missed the thread where you discussed it, but how was your holiday?

I'd prefer to just reinstate the ban button, although there's always that worry about which power-mad cycle-paths we entrust to wield it.
Scrybl: Rather than do little posts here and there about it I was planning on doing a longer, all in one post. Haven't got round to it, however, because I'm all ill with bird flu/sars/the aids. Plus I've hit a Flickr Free barrier and need to upgrade my account when I've got some money in the bank. Then you can all note how badly I've photographed Singapore. Roll on payday (tomorrow). I'll sort it all out at the weekend.
Everyone on topic: Teh Button's fine, I suppose, but as you've mentioned, it's all down to one person in the end. Maybe a Karma voting system of some sort would be better. Though that's probably a fair bit more work and also has its flaws.
I mean, I'd love to encourage new members and get the chat back to a good pace but how's the best way to do that and moderate it without seeming like a bunch of cliquey cunts?
ZACKLY
i'm still up for switching back to the old code, wherein cal had already solved all these social problems. cal, i know you were dead against it when you first kicked off iamcal2, but also you thought then that you were going to be able to do a lot more extra coding on it.
in the interests of the Community, is it now more palatable?
thinks: actually, if i can write live mapping code b/w iamcal1 & iamcal2 ddl, and if the server's mysql is vn5, i should be able to write triggers to keep 2 DBs in synch, and then you could run BOTH sets of code on their own DBs and users could simply choose whichever they prefer.
mind you, having said that, to do a Ban on iamcal2 which doesn't support it, i'd have to wipe all posts after a ban on the iamcal1 system, which would mean there's an inter-triggerpoint inconsistency b/w the 2 dbs: iamcal2 would show extra posts from the bannee until the iamcal1 trigger completed. but that should be negligible

But this is iamcal and we're
allowed to be a bunch of cliquey cunts.
heh.
but biting observational glibness aside, a nonbreeding community dies without fresh blood.
compare and contrast the liveliness of the old iamcal with its current state.
or to put it another way, no point being a cliquey cunt if there's no one around to notice you're not talking to them.
or worse (& quite likely), being cliquey cunts absolutely oblivious to the fact that to the rest of the internet, they're in the midst of another, much larger group, on the same forum site, which has moved on to something quite different and which belittles and regards as a running joke the cliquey cunts posting in the midst of their threads, oblivious to the rest of the site and ALL new visitors laughing at them.
sul I sent you a present x
I just noticed. Wow. Thanks, that's brilliant. Are you stoned? ;)
you know us dutchies ;-)
have fun
Heh. Seriously though, much thanks. That's really generous. I'll add you to the naked Sul group when I get a minute.

I received no promite and am suggesting you never sent it in the first place. Yes I

I think we need to find some uni students, they're so bored they keep the momentum going. I remember whiling away entire days of my degree purely on here and ICQ..

It seems quite a few iamcalers were uni students but now have graduated and gone into work. Poor sods.
like me :(
Then there are the likes of Beagoad, who was at work, then was on here far too much, then was no longer at work...for some reason.
Pfft. Lazy students. I was always supposed to be working.
we could all go back to uni? I remember drunkenly posting once with bumdog. I feel all nostalgic.
I should probably do some work though as i just spent the last hour and a half playing animal crossing.
