I'll be ordering mine as soon as i know what it is ;)

they should sell that direct off the Yahoo frontpage. after all, yahoo's the ORIGINAL portal site, isn't it?

very old buzzword (bingo). sorry.

still: go on, cal. mention it to the marketing dept. bound to be someone who'll suddenly start laughing, and it'd be brilliant if yahoo leant its corporate weight to a (multiple) in-joke.

The Weighted Companion Cube is your friend (well, for a brief time anyway) in the game Portal. :)

I had no idea what it was either so I read the article and their review and wiki etc.
Now I want to buy the game for steve, but I'm having trouble finding it on it's own (ie not in the Orange Box). It has to be for PC.
If anyone stumbles across it I'd love to know, thanks
Posted by su, 17th November 2007:

OMG miki you worked it out all on your own - WOW
but i assumed since syl couldn't it wasn't possible

;)

Miki you can use Steam to download Just Portal for $20, BUT the Orange Box download is $50 but includes several other things (half life 2 which i already have) but also episodes 1 and 2 and Team Fortress 2 (which has some beautiful cartoon renderings) So even if you guys already have half life 2 then its only $30 more to get episodes 1, 2 and team fortress. All those things on their own would be $130. So i guess its a good deal, even if you are buying half life 2 again. Apparently if you already have half life 2 then you can give your "old" copy away to a friend.

I guess the only way it would be a bad deal would be if you already have half life 2, ep1 and ep2. If so then you might be better off just getting Portal on its own for £10 / $20

Personaly I'm going to wait till the 8800GT comes back in stock and get me one of those and the Orange Box (and maybe Crysis)

:D

I subtly (there is something wrong with that word) asked steve if he had HL and he does have 1 and 2 but I dont think he has episode 1 and 2 and also never heard him mention team fortress 2.
I had also never heard of the wole Steam deal, but read about it this afternoon when I read the above stuff. I prefer to actually own a hard copy so I just ordered the orange box off amazon. Including postage to nl it came to 33,25 pounds. A little more expensive then 50 dollars, but then I will have something to giftwrap for his birthday.
So thanks for posting that Grim...!

Ermmmm. I guess Steve doesn't read the site anymore then.....
Posted by che, 18th November 2007:

I was thinking that last night
Posted by che, 18th November 2007:

Miki - yeah that sounds like a good deal.
The other good thing is that when you register the games on steam then it means you can download them if you ever lose them. Like I cant find my Half Life 2 disk anywhere, but i logged on and it let me redownload it for free. Which is coolio.
Posted by Miki, around 18th November 2007:

no steve doesn't read the site anymore, I'm not that silly :P

che, that part did sound nice, the re-downloading and also being updated. But I also read that accounts freeze and they have other problems with regions for games and different prices for different parts of the world etc.

you can still use steam even if you got the game in the shop. You type in the code that you find in the box and it adds it to your steam account. So you have the best of both worlds. You have a proper real life copy for christmas, and it also gives you access to the virtual copy if you need it. :)

no it's not the doc reviving this old thread, it's me

after a year (!) steve has finally gotten 'round to playing portal and loved it.
now it's just in time to start looking for something for his next birthday, any suggestions?
he has a PC and a Wii so any game would have to be for either of those.

We have zelda and mario galaxy and the mario racing thing for the wii
He has expressend an interest in the new tomb raider game and quantum of solace.

*bump*

Get that thing that is the shape and size of a horse that youc can plug into your Wii for the horse game!

Miki, has he played Bioshock? (for the PC)
It's VERY good
(It also came out quite some time ago, but if he's only just played portal then that might not be a problem!)
Posted by Grim..., 25th November 2008:

Hmm, I found Bioshock pretty, but dull.
Actually, that's not fair - the first half was good, then it started getting a bit "go here, get this, come back", then the bit where you had to, er, dress up - rubbish.
And the whole 'moral choice' thing was crap and not worth bothering with, too.
Posted by Miki, around 26th November 2008:

Thanks doc :D

I dont think he's ever mentioned Bioshock, so it would be a possible.
Steve really appreciates games that look good, he's always admiring water effects and reflective surfaces :D
He's playing Metroid on the Wii and it's the pretty.

Any other ideas? Thanks for the help!

i'd suggest 2nd Life but apparently it's full of whores and mistresses, according to the uk press ATM.
possibly not what you're looking for, miki?

"Steve really appreciates games that look good,"

Bioshock looks REALLY good.
Posted by Grim..., around 26th November 2008:

It certainly does.
Posted by che, around 26th November 2008:

Grim... have you seen the teaser for 2?
Posted by Grim..., 27th November 2008:

I have - looks to be more of the same, which isn't a bad thing. Have you played Mirror's Edge? I'm really liking that at the moment.
Posted by che, 27th November 2008:

Have seen lots of mirrors edge vids. looks good
re: more of the same, yeah I have no complaints about more of the same if it looks and sounds that good.
