...but I dont want to take any antibiotics so close Christmas and all the booze I intend to consume.

Current symptoms include:
- Increasingly bad chest pain, so bad I cant use my right arm to play any energetic Wii games. Coughing brings tears to my eyes and standard breathing is quite uncomfortable.
- I'm short of breath, even more than normal
- I may have a fever or the heating is on higher than normal

Am I likely to die before the 4th Jan?

Ja I had that one earlier this year. Couldn't breathe. Doctor had to nebulize me. Sorry Sul-leh :(
*rubs Vicks on your chest* ;)

go to the doctor and ask for steroids instead of antibiotics
or make sure you get the antibiotics you can drink with

you might not die, but if it gets worse and you are out on the town and can't breath, you get to spend crimbo in the hospital

question1, bit gross maybe but: are you coughing up slime
question2, if so is it green?
question3, do you actually have a fever?

If the answer to any of those questions is no, then you possibly don't have an infection. If you don't have an infection then antibiotics will certainly not help you. Cough medicine might make you feel better, but with most of them you should definitely not have any alcohol. If you don't have an infection you probably won't die (unless it's sars/bird-flu/ebola etc)

If you do have an infection then they would likely prescribe amoxicillin (or doxycycline), and drinking alcohol would be bad. There are antibiotics that have less adverse effects from alcohol, but then the recommendation is still like 2 beers a day, which I assume is not what you were planning.
If you go the corticosteroid route (most likely prednisolon) then alcohol is a very bad idea as well. Also prednisolon on its own won't cure the infection; it is supposed to give your body a chance to do it on its own.
If you have an infection and choose not to take either, then I'm afraid alcohol is still a bad idea as it's reputed to hinder your body's ability to heal itself.

On the whole I have been told that your body is supposed to be able to heal an infection on its own, eventually (so no, you would not die) but pouring gallons of alcohol on top of it won't be good and you can actually die from this (I think I mentioned I had to be resuscitated once)

At the risk of being overly sentimental on iamcal: I like you, please don't kill yourself :) Go to the doctor, take whatever he thinks would be good and do the drinking some other time.

As for the pain, when I have the chest infections I am also sore in my shoulders and back, it's just from the coughing and is annoying but nothing special.

Wow Miki, top advice there!

Take it easy Sul and don't smoke coz that will hurt your lungs some more. You should be alright as you don't mention coughing up blood.

miki myou rock
and no drinking with prednsoine - hmm i was a bad girl this year
Posted by Sul, 22nd December 2007:

Thanks for the advice. I'll take it on board. :)

So, Miki: When were you resuscitated, why, and is it as easy an ordeal to bounce back from as ER suggests?

"At the risk of being overly sentimental on iamcal: I like you"

I'm pretty sure you meant "at the risk of saying something completely nonsensical and without logic".

(although I was pretty amused that Sul defines level of illness by his relative ability to continue playing Wii games...)

Get better soon - I had this one and took some garlic tablets. It helped me!

Cheers. An Ibuprofen, Codeine, Various Cough Medicines and Alcohol cocktail is doing a fucking marvelous job at the moment. Wooooooooo

That's some doctor!

try taking some zinc supplements too in the mornings. Typically I've come down with a lovely productive cough that I thought had gone (there was brown phlegm at one point) and a raging cold.
When I had shingles the doctor said I could take ibuprofen every four hours and 2 hours into each dose, take paracetamol, in order to keep nice and dosed up.
On the plus side if you're feeling that rough then it's probably going to be a lot cheaper to get pissed than normal.

ps. yes, please don't die, we need three more iamcal weddings before we have an iamcal funeral.

amusing brock hasn't railed against unqualified people offering advice

miki- a couple of aussie doctors told me that a serious infection's mucus turning green was actually a good sign -- an indication that the body had turned the tide and was in the final stretch of eliminating the infection. is this different from your understanding?
Posted by Saltation, around 25th December 2007:

ps: sul: dead or not?

I suspect it'll take more than unqualified medical advice to damage Sul. Have you heard the way he treats his body?
Posted by su, around 27th December 2007:

yes sul
did youm poisin the infection with alchool?
Posted by AxeMan, around 27th December 2007:

Im alive, thanks. Chest doesnt hurt so much. The yellow skin-tone makes me feel like a Simpsons character though. I'm sure that'll pass, right? ;)

sul = goth simpson

:D
Posted by Miki, around 30th December 2007:

zombie simpson?

glad to hear you're not dead sully :) though your choice of self medication would not be my first choice ...

eh I was ressussithingied in a hospital so thankfully no pounding on my ribs (they used electrickery) and they had to do that pulp fiction jobby with the needle in the heart. as I was dead at the time I don't remember any of it, and I don't think it took me long to recover from it no (I was 8 and it was a chest infection gone bad). I think if they hurt your ribs it's sore for ages

eh salty with my specialist it's: if it's not green (yet) prednisone on it's on, if it is green then prednisone + antibiotics

let the bad jokes commence :D

i'm after some unqualified medical advice. I've been blowing out varying shades of mucus for the past few days (ranging from bright green to brown). I now have a sinus infection and am coughing up bonus dark green stuff. I probably should go to the doctor to get antibiotics but having just read this - news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/... - I realllly don't want to go to the doctors surgery.

so do i sit it out and document my interesting mucus colours whilst overdosing on sudafed or do i chance it and get an appointment tomorrow?
Posted by Sul, around 3rd January 2008:

It's a tough call. You've certainly sealed my fate though. No way I'm going up there now. Half the people in this scummy little town probably have that nasty thing.
Posted by jeffry, around 3rd January 2008:

apologies if you die as a result of me putting you off going to the doctor. still, if you're lucky enough then you might get ill enough to warrant a house call.
i think i might invest in a facemask and disposable gloves for upcoming tube journeys

Hope y'all get better soon! Last year was terrible - I got THREE bad colds (with chest infection) when I normally don't get anything, so you have my sympathies :/
Just rest a lot and drink fresh OJ - I think that's best.
Posted by Miki, around 3rd January 2008:

go to the docter both of you sissies ;-)

are you dead yet suleth?
Posted by Saltation, around 6th January 2008:

miki: ta. if your docs're correct, that suggests the green is more a sign of infection than of virus-tide-turning. but having seen it myself a lot of times on the tailend of viruses, i suspect then that clear-then-green mucus is a sign of opportunistic infection coming in on the back of a virus (lowered/otherwise-applied defences) but not seen until after the virus is sorted (first things first).

jeffry: you're in the UK. what makes you think you'll be allowed to see a doctor before you're better?
