Alright, feckit, what ALBUMS, in any format, have you bought expecting them to be brill only to find that you never play them after a couple of times? Or do you kiddies just buy by the track from iTunes these days?

what's an album?

isn't it part of a negg?

bought?
Posted by WarHead, around 19th May 2009:

Yes, bought!! I'm assuming that all subscribers to iamcal obtain their music legally. And if you didn't buy it, it could be a disappointment, but that's not the same as having wasted money on it.
Posted by jeffry, around 20th May 2009:

Spotify is legal, so is last.fm radio so ner. But your other point, fair point, well made sir. I remember ap used to come home with about 4 new cds a week, his house was like some kind of cave made of jewel cases
Posted by WarHead, around 20th May 2009:

Ah yes, I love Spotify. It's the only place I've ever been able to find any recordings by Box of Frogs (legendary short-lived prog rock band from the dark ages). So, yes, I know we can now listen legally, but I was thinking about the not too distant past when we did actually obtain our music on a disk, tape or other physical medium of some sort.

And call me old-fashioned if you like, but I still like to buy CDs, although I realise this may not be possible for much longer. What I really miss is 12" LPs, not because of the sound quality, but for the art work and the ability to actually read the lyrics and sleeve notes on them. A lot of text on CDs is too small for me to read, even with my specs, but a 12" square was an ideal size for some decent art.

I'd buy cds but I have a fear of 'stuff'.

In answer to your initial question - Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X. I think it got 1 listen.
Posted by cal, around 20th May 2009:

i love that album :D
Posted by che, 20th May 2009:

Sneaker Pimps: Becoming X is amazing!
I then went and got the album they put out before that and it was terrible.
Posted by cal, around 21st May 2009:

that was their first album. after that were splinter and bloodsport
Posted by WarHead, around 21st May 2009:

/me asks Spotify to play some Sneaker Pimps, please.

First few seconds is critical - first few seconds of 'Spin Spin Sugar' hasn't turned me off. Like the bass line ..... like the strings ... looking good.

:(

Further tracks did not live up to the first.

"that was their first album. after that were splinter and bloodsport"

Aha, it must have been bloodsport I got several years afterwards.
It didn't have the female vocalist and it wasn't any good IMHO

Chappy from Sneaker Pimps now has a solo project called IAMX. Been told by those who are into that sort of thing that it's good, though I've not heard a note meself. Ditto with Kelli Dayton/Ali's stuff.

Spotify is a bleeding godsend. These days I can't afford to fanny about and buy CDs I may not like so it's great as a "try before you buy". Before that, it was t*rr*nts all the way, though if I really like something I've nicked, I'll do the right thing and buy it. Gone are the days of 4 CDs a week though - I'm probably down to 3 these days ;)

Can't quite remember the last stinker I bought though - if the question was about DVDs I bought blind after a recommendation then I'd have to say "La Antena". A bit like a cross between Melies and Gilliam you say? Well why is it a tedious pile of artless sub-Luhrmann ass, then?

That MGMT album was a bit pish, now I think about it.

can I highjack this thread to talk about my most recent film disappointment?

Know1ng was crap
Posted by che, around 26th May 2009:

Miki, was your second most recent film disappointment "Watchmen"? Cos I feel vaguely guilty about insisting that we went to see that. (Although I thought it was awesome, Im not sure the rest of the gang was so enthused!)
Posted by Miki, around 27th May 2009:

don't worry, even though I wouldn't call it awesome it was definitely worth seeing :D

we just had a long weekend and decided to catch up on cinema so we saw Star Trek, X-men origins: Wolverine, Angels and Demons and Know1ng (in that order).
The first three were a lot of fun, but Know1ng was really crappy.

terminator 4 was a bit lame :(

The second CSS album was dogturd, come to think of it. As was Prince's last double album, which, as a big fan, was a shame :(
Posted by Grim..., around 5th June 2009:

Is that the one given away by the Daily Mail?
Posted by arsepuppy, around 5th June 2009:

Nah, that was "Planet Earth", which apart from 2 tracks (I'm being generous here) was a bit poo, quite possibly his worst ever to that point.

His new album is the double album "Lotusflow3r/MPLsound". The first part sounds like a really shit Lenny Kravitz impression, which ain't good since poor old Lenny (apart from being briefly good in 1994) is, in all fairness, a bit dogshit really. The second part is "New Prince" (post J-Dubs) done in the style of Old Prince (when he wrote song about fucking his sister amongst other things - basically, when he was ace), complete with Fairlights and Linn drums etc. On paper it sounds good, but he somehow manages, possibly by way of some magic purple pixie dust, to make it the worst shit ever. Now as a stupid Prince fan I tend to defend even his shit stuff but I had to draw a line here. It's *that bad*. Shame.

CSS had an album called 'Donkey.' (I now this 'cos it's on Spotify. Never heard of them before this thread.) Does enyone know if Uncle Peter provided guest vocals?
Posted by arsepuppy, around 6th June 2009:

woofbark!

Fun fact: Uncle Peter lives in the next town from me here (he's in Fleckney, I'm in Oadby)
