I realise as an atheist I shouldn't really be wishing people a Merry Christmas, but "Winter Holiday" sounds too PC to my CofE schooled ear.

Ah that's awesome, you've even got hairy arms! And it's still called christmas despite your beliefs so it's all good.

I believe it's important to think about the future so every once in a while I take a really emberrasing picture of Katie to be used when (in)appropriate when she's 18
So get a santa hat, fold the ears over for gnome-effect and feed porridge:
Happy holidays everyone

right
so we have planned to drive over to steves parents for christmas
we would leave on tuesday, drive through holland, belgium, northern france, go through the channel tunnel and drive past london to reading.
usually about a 8 hour trip including extra stop for feeding katie
now as you've probably noticed there has been some snow
everywhere
so the question is, how bad are conditions? is it doable or is it irresponsable to try?
any insight, tips, thoughts, opinions?
last year I think conditions were even worse and we did chance it and we did make it, but we do realise that was absolutely down to luck

Driving was HORRIBLE yesterday. But then it hasn't snowed here since and isn't due to snow again until Thursday. I hear that south of here was even worse. temperatures are well below freezing but I assume snow will be cleared and roads gritted today and tomorrow so it should be better. I certainly wouldn't like to do that journey in those conditions ever again. But as I say I think the roads are better today.

More info for you Miki:
"With France also suffering severe weather, Eurostar said it had cancelled some trains, and speed restrictions were adding two hours to journeys.
The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for France, warning of disruption to road, rail and air travel in the country."

Good job, Miki.
Happy Yuletide, everyone.
Mrs. W and I had a scary drive back to Manchester from Lancaster last Friday. We'd been up to visit friends in Ambleside and more friend in Lancaster on the way back. The weather was fine until we drove into Lancaster, when it began to snow, but it wasn't sticking on the roads. We went for a pub dinner, then back to our friends' place a for a chat, and left them at about 10pm. The drive back home from there is usually about 50 minutes, but it took around two and a half hours, as it began snowing not long after we got on to the M6. Before we got to the Blackpool junction we were down to one lane and couldn't see any road markings as they were all under the snow.
At times we were crawling along at 5mph, but a few people tried going faster and got stuck in the deeper snow in the middle and outside lanes. The passenger side wiper got iced up and pulled away from the screen, so Mrs W couldn't see a great deal. Luckily, mine stayed clear. The worst bit was when a 3 ton box van ground to a halt in lane two on an incline around a hundred yards in front of us and its back end began to slide into our lane, and I was worried that it was going to slide backwards into us. Luckily he managed to straighten up and I was able to pass him on the inside before he started spinning again. The only time we slid was half a mile from home, stopping at some traffic lights. Anyway, we were lucky to get home when we did. Things got a lot worse on that stretch of motorway just an hour or so later. Lots of vehicles abandoned and huge tailbacks.

I'm glad you and Mrs Warhead, Miki and family are ok.
this snow-session was odd, wasn't it? despite having lower grit stocks than last year (they'd SAID they were going to stock up...), they actually gritted all the main roads really really well. i'm in part of the country that gets megaly snowed on (we got 6" in the first few hours of it) but you could actually drive safely if you could get out of your driveway. which i couldn't...
so i've bought me something new and wonderful: snow socks. 50 quid, grip better than snow-chains, and made out of "fabric" so they take only a few seconds to put on/take off. FWD & 4WD cars only need 1 pair. and despite being fabric you can drive faster than on snowchains: up to 50kph. unreserved recommendation.

autosock.com for them to arrive in 2 days, or pop into any vauxhall dealership.
when i got mine i moved the car out of the garage to try them, discovered that if they didn't work i was screwed because the car was now immovable on the snow -- even full throttle just compacted it to ice and didn't melt it. popped them on, drove it round like there was no snow. utterly gobsmacking.
"this has been a public service announcement" :D
