A friend of mine said something interesting to me the other day. I asked her how she keeps her skinny figure and she said it was mostly about eating not being the most fun she will have all day. I love eating, it's one of my favourite things. I guess if you have a lot of other things going on in your life, you think less about food and eating. I love cooking and experimenting with delicious food, especially now since I went vegan, you have to make more of an effort to make tasty meals, because your diet can become monotonous. Beans beans beans...vegans are farty. *parp*
Posted by che, 4th February 2011:

See the "vegans/vegetarians are farty thing", you will find after a few months of your new diet that your digestive system gets used to the lack of meat and the increase in pulses, and you'll be far less gassy.

I love cooking and eating. We usually cook every day (unless we go out for a meal) and I am trying to cook one new recipe each week, as well as the old favourites, in the hope of finding some new favourites.

Studies have shown that no fad diets work. None of them. Doesn't matter what they claim, what sort of fat they say you are eating, no carbs, just salad whatever, doesn't work. The only thing that works is very simple:

Eat Less, Exercise More.

It's good that you are doing your exercise each morning, as it is the "Exercise More" part that most people fall down on (me included). Also if you do a good chunk of exercise then it means you can eat a good chunk of food and still stay in balance. And your vegan diet means that you are eating Less in terms of fats so that's all good as well.

Keep us posted as how the new lifestyle goes.

And don't forget to share any good recipes with me (I still haven't gotten around to scanning that falafel burger recipe in!)

if you haven't seen it already, my vegan friend recommended veganyumyum.com - i haven't tried anything from there yet but most weeks i'll have a few meat free meals without really realising it.

I also found that the best way to control what you eat is to have a meal plan for the week - it also saves lots of money on shopping as you're not always going to the shops to get bits and pieces and you can get a good balance of meals in rather than just having what you feel like that evening.

I agree with Brock

there, are you happy now? this is what your philosophy leads to
agreeing with brock
somewhere some fairies must be weeping

as far as I can tell humands are omnivores and therefore our bodies are in principle suited to deal with meat
and yes, humans have completely messed up their diets so I assume my body can not properly deal with loads of stuff, so what
/miki goes in search of the brilliant "white mice cause cancer" thread from them oldie days
and there are animals and there is meat and one has nothing to do with the other
and no I would not personally be able to kill an animal, but I would also not be able to root around peoples mouthes and fix teeth, but I'm glad somebody does

Posted by syl, around 11th February 2011:

Meat rots in your body and makes you sick. We did not evolve eating meat since we did not have the tools to kill animals. (see=apes=evolution?) Maybe we got the odd rabbit and squirrel and bird, but we were mostly herbivores. Sorry, but your information is wrong.

"enough! you two have driven me to insanity"

Me being one of "you two" ?

If so, then FFS miki, I said absolutely nothing about converting anyone to veganism or vegetarianism in this thread (last time I did that was a good 6 years ago, probably far longer), The only times I mentioned diet in this thread was in a conversation directed at Syl to encourage her in her new venture and to offer her some advice about diet and the misery that comes from vegan cheese.

It's one thing if I had reverted to trying to convert the inconvertible, but really. I was just trying to engage in pleasant conversation with Syl. It's one of the precious few conversations on here these days but nobody made you read it.

Any if you can't stand syl's links and "enthusiastic" debating then please bear with her, it's just the stage that everyone goes through when they find a new cause/interest/hobby.

like I said I was trying to make a joke, and in that way participate in (like you said) one of the few alive threads on the site
I have no beef with Brock, I have no problem with agreeing with Brock, the whole 'fairies weeping' thing is ludicrous and I trusted Brock would understand this and not be hurt/insulted (and also not to care even if he took it seriously)

I have no problems with you and syl discussing anything, again I trusted that you both would understand this, hopefully laugh, and reply something scathing that you would also not mean. All I was expecting was something like "haha, going vegan/vegeterian is better then agreeing with brock, so join us quickly miki" from you or syl

and just in case my meaning didn't completely come across in the written word I added a winking smiley

now as I added later, it wasn't all that funny, and I shouldnt have included you in the first place but it wasnt meant to be taken so bloody seriously. I dont know how to say it any clearer IT WAS A BAD JOKE about agreeing with brock, actually regardless of the topic of agreement, made in order to promote some silly conversation.

ok
Posted by Brock, around 13th February 2011:

I have no issues, Miki. I thought it was funny. I remember when this site used to be more about taking the piss and having fun than evangelising over poorly researched diet choices.

Syl, re: Osteoporosis. Horseshit. Canadian figures - 1 in 8 men, 1 in 4 women over 50 are affected by Osteoporosis. If it was as fundamentally affected by the meat eating as you suggest then it would be a significantly higher number, reflecting more closely the %vegetarian versus omnivorous population.

Re: We're not omnivores. Utter horseshit. Our teeth alone point to evolution to omnivorous diet, as does our digestive system. Yes, perhaps not as much meat as we generally eat now (hunter gathers tend not to have meat with every meal in many cultures/animal species) but we ARE evolved to eat meat. To suggest otherwise is baive to say the least. And flat our wrong.

We did not evolve eating meat since we did not have the tools to kill animals. (see=apes=evolution?)

You know that chimpanzees eat meat, right? You also know that we have been eating meat (and provably so) for thousands of years, possibly tens of thousands at least. Clearly your research needs a whole shit load of work.

"Meat rost in your body"

Only if your digestion system is inadequately matched to the amount of food you eat or the proportions. A balanced diet and proper portions will mean nothing rots in there. It's the fact that people eat too much red meat and too much of it in general that may be the issue. You cannot extrapolate from 'too much' to 'all of it is bad' as it is not sound logic.

I have no problems with people wanting to be vegetarian. I have noticed, however, that meat eaters say "Why on earth do you not eat meat? It's lovely and tasty" yet vegetarians and vegans say "You meat eaters are WRONG to eat meat! Your evolution precludes it! You're EVIL for doing so! EVERYTHING about eating meat is wrong" or similar levels of attack. On behalf of meat eaters, go fuck yourself with your evangelising. Your diet is a choice and no more valid or less valid than mine. The fact that humans are evolved and capable of eating meat is blatantly true, or more than the occasional meat ingestion would be much, much worse for us.

No, you're a crass, ignorant and self-centred cow. That's astonishing. Veganism is a fucking diet choice, dear. It's not in the slightest bit comparable to a religion or fucking genocide.

This is precisely my point about how a lot of vegetarians (it seems a majority, although that may be due to the vehemence of their preaching) lose all credibility and actually damage their cause as they're so vile in how they attack other people in their own dietary choices. You are utterly without perspective, and miki made a joke (a perfectly innocent and mildly amusing joke - clearly labeled to anyone with mental acuity) yet you are now attacking how she raises her children?

Actually, environmentally the best approach is to suggest that people cut down their meat a little (by pointing out the cost savings, possible health benefits and the fact that not all veggie food is shit).

That's why a lot of campaigns now focus on things such as "meat free monday", suggesting that once a week people have a meat free meal. The idea being that if you get a lot of people to cut down their meat by a bit, that works out better for the environment/public health than getting a few people to cut meat out completely. (most of the people who would give up meat completely have already done so, and to try to get other people to do so would be like smashing your head against a wall, people will do what they like, not what you insist that they do).

The best way to do this:
invite friends for a home cooked veggie meal, open a bottle of red and suggest some nice recipes.

The worst way to do this:
invite friends for a meal, open a scrapbook filled with images from slaughterhouses, and suggest they go fuck themselves.

It's a matter of approach. If you choose the former, you might get a few meat free meals into the world, which if that is your bag, then good for you. If you choose the second route you will quickly find yourself dining alone...

I do not make any distinction between living beings.

Yeah I'm sure it was a generalization. I mean some dogs eat a lot more than others, some 4x4s use more resources in manufacture and use than others, but I guess that regardless of degrees of accuracy it does point out to people that the "easy targets" in environmentalism (cars, coal, plastic etc) are not the only issues. Many people fail to think about the less obvious ones (food production, animals, babies etc).

christ. for once in my life, i find myself agreeing with brock.
humans are not built for living on vegetables alone. our digestive system is all wrong for starters (the teeth are 99.99% a giveaway, but an amusing-in-context exception is the firefox (if anyone's interested, i can recount the London Zoo story of how they accidentally discovered this via a zookeeper's compassion to the dying animal) ).

but something interesting that the british people here should think about: there's not a lot of difference b/w a vegetarian diet and eating british beef. it tastes grey. it's not filling. it's just protein. it's lacking all the key micro-nutrients. because the animals don't RUN, they don't LIVE. i can eat 2 big british steaks and be full but still hungry. whereas i can eat a thin venison steak or half a kangaroo steak and be utterly uninterested in further eating. if i'm not exercising, half a roo steak means i literally won't want to eat the next day. at all. just not interested.
because they're wild. they've lived active lives. even aussie BEEF has to live an active life, because our water-hence-grassdensity is so poor they have to keep moving. that's why it tastes so much nicer.
because our tongues are evolved to detect nutrition.

i would vastly prefer to be vegetarian. i hate the idea of killing animals to survive. (but then, i'm killing vegetables to survive if i don't :)
but my ability to function at the top of my game goes to pieces if i go vegetarian.

sugar, on the other hand, is like cocaine for the tongue. it tricks us into thinking things are more nutritious than they are.

we are fully evolved to handle fat. if you eat too much fat, your digestive system blows it out your arse.
sugar, though, doesn't exist really in nature. our bodies use it as a high-density mechanism for post-digestion liver energy-transfer to the cells. insulin is triggered (normally) at that point in a blind-feedback mechanism to signal the cells to take up not just the energy but the other key nutrients.
if there's a FLOOD of sugar, relatively, it indicates evolutionarily that you've gone from starvation to brief opportunity, and there's a flood of insulin which triggers the body laying up every bit of sugar as fat.

it's only the modern diet ("corn syrup"...) which has introduced sugar to our mouths.

if you want to lose weight, lose the sugar.

be aware that a lot of now-common foods actually have a huge-sugar impact on the body. potato, eg, is almost weight-for-weight equivalent to sugar. pasta almost as bad (although, oddly, not spaghetti), likewise bread.
the popularity of bacon makes sudden sense in this context, since pork is 30% sugar, plus drenched in salt, which opens the pores of the tastebuds so they feel it more.

if you want to lose weight, lose the sugar.
