It's just that I've heard that the Brittish are really racist. No offense, I guess you guys are just proud to be --- well --- Britts.

In my experience, Americans are FAR FAR FAR FAR and away more racist than any brit I've ever met.. White americans barely associate at all with any other color, and vice versa.. (I'm a brit who's lived in the US for 2.5 years now).. Oh, and not to be picky, but technically there is no such race as the Brittish.. (only ONE t in british.).

Be proud of your nationality. It's part of who you are. Don't be proud of racism. The immigration laws are not intended to be racist."It is poor people living in council estates (social housing) who come up against asylum seekers who move into the black economy and who take their jobs," the sources added. "They are the ones who feel the impact and this is where the tension is generated over illegal immigration."From

As a rule, we've never hung anyone from trees on account of their race. What racism we have here tends to stem from poverty and ignorance, which we've got in abundance considering we're a rich country. But, all told, we hate the French more than anyone.

As if brits don't have doughnuts

Actually, the way I've always seen it corresponds with Cal's post above. There is a plethora of ignorant, stereotyping, racist morons no matter where you are.Americans seem to shine in that category just because they get more press over their morons. The truth of it is that no "country" is any better, as the existence of even one of these described people is intolerable. And seeing as that's coming from a Canadian (you know, the polite people, that say "eh" and live in igloos) it should mean a bit of something. Now then, back to hating the French...~cough~

twitch, 20:50, 12th September 2001:
While I've not spent any time whatsoever in Britain, and my contact with the British has been limited to online correspondances, I can say, without a doubt in my mind, that Americans are far and away the most racist citizens on the market today. We had slavery, you had slavery. We had race riots, you had race riots. We interred Japanese Americans during WWII, you... Well, we needn't go into that. And to think, even in the light of the recent events at the WTC, we've even handed out death threats and little race wars for our Arabic Americans.

We're just a bad here. headlines saying "10,000 americans dead". Who cares that they're american? They are fellow humans who died, regardless of nationality.

Have you seen our headlines? Now that we know the hijackers were Arab... Well... You can imagine what we're doing with that.
I'm already sick of walking down streets and hearing racist slurs against the Arab Americans. I'm sick of hearing them on radio shows.

Does the Ku Klux clan and deep south rednecks ring any bells? Who abolished slavery first? Who controlled 2/3's of the world and gave it back? Everyone is proud of their nationality, is that racist?
Posted by
cal, 08:49, 28th September 2001:
not everyone is proud of their nationality
but there's not a distinct line between rascisim and not. just with any decision anyone ever makes (shall i have strawberry or banana yoghurt?) descrimination comes into play, but it's up the opinion of the individual how far they take it.
Spell British properly and someone in the UK just might take you seriously. And don't ask such stupid fucking questions about a whole nation, it's like me asking how fucking stupid are all Americans
My country at this time in our history is standing shoulder to shoulder with your America. Thats all you lot over there need to know.

i was talking to my mum last night about the Victoria Climbie case. her parents have blamed "the uk" for the attrocity. my mum took this very personaly but i feel that although the government (theoretically) represents us, when someone accuses a country of something, they are often only talking about the failings of that country's government. and let's face it, all of our governments are collectively crap.
Hello
From what I've read this question is pointless Being british hasn't really effected me one bit. A british bloke is the same to me as an american guy. why should where we come from effect our relationships with other people. it's rather pathetic to me and why do you Americans always ask question like that and make us feel like aliens? Do you want us to spell "Americans" wrong?

You obviously haven't met too many Americans or Brits. There are some VERY marked differences (tho in total, we're more alike than unalike), it's called 'culture'.
Yeah, cos this is a conversation that needed reviving

Blame marlastarkey :P
I'm English, I identify more with being english rather than British or European. Am I racist? err, I think we all have a little racism inside of us.
The fact that we allow ourselves to be divided into 'ethnic groups' by the government proves that. As soon as we reconise people as people and not as Pakistani or African or English or Irish or American problems of racism will reduce.
Problem is.... we dont want to let go of these labels because they are stong cultural identifiers for ourselves. Natch.
And then you got the ignorant twats who just seem to like causing pain, no excuse for that.
is that making sense.

And why are you all moaning about the spelling of British? Let me assure you, it doesn't matter. As far as other countries are concerned, we're all Europeans now.

Ah, maybe that is my new form of subversion. but more likely I dont actually know the words.
Every Country has some form of racism, but do you blame it on the country or the people that live there?
A country cannot be blamed for its people’s actions. It is society and culture that is responsible for making people racist.
Chandler I am proud that you didn't take the bait on this one.
That question opens up all forms of arguments that are not necessary.

Line 2 was my opinion
Line 3 was a note to chandler .. cause we all know that he tends to argue about everything and he didn't
Line 4 was in reference to the topic posted.

hummmmmmmm, it's all a bunch of arse.
people only care about themselves at the end of the day - racism, sexism etc are just their generalisations...
i don't think the british are particularly racist. the fact is that the 'natives' are white anglo saxon protestants, and some people see the acceptance of this as racism. i think britain is an accepting country really, with no REAL enemies (the french english thing is fun, but its not going to spark a war... i hope.)
As im writing this im sitting in JFK airport. ive done a bunch of touristy things in the last couple of days, including a boat trip around manhattan. the guy-with-the-mic who was pointing out buildings gave a very strong oppinion of the Arabs and people from afghanistan, saying that if they were inprisoned in New York, they would be attacked by all americans, including him. A lot of people on the boat were nodding in agreement. im not having a go at all americans, but isnt it supposed to be a land of freedom etc etc etc, and yet this is blatent racism.
sorry, i dont think that came accross very clearly. ive had a long day...

As an American citizen who lived in the UK for several years I can say I have met some extremely racist people in both countries. However, the vast majority of people in both countries are reasonable.
Of course, you always remember the bad apples and forget the good.
As for the people in New York and their comments about the "Arabs" - can't believe they said that on the boat trip! wow. I apologize. I wouldn't say that is representative of all Americans. People all over my city have "No war with Iraq" signs all over.
thats okay missy! it wasnt a poke at americans, it was an example of open racism, and the worry that people agreed so strongly.

What is 'the Victoria Climbie case'?
"Climbie" is pronounced "Columbie". She's the black girl who was tortured and killed by her aunt and her boyfriend.
